City of Kodiak Lifeguard (Temporary) in Kodiak, Alaska

The City of Kodiak Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for temporary Lifeguards. The Department is looking for an experienced team player that has a desire to be a part of a progressive Parks and Recreation Department working hard to serve the needs of our community. This position provides the necessary support to successfully and safely run the various Parks and Recreation aquatic programs. Positions work closely with youth, parents, and volunteers; and monitor activities and responsible use of facilities to ensure public safety. Under direct supervision of a lead Recreation Coordinator, this position coordinates programs, oversees participants, facility operations, organized group activities and games, and monitors adult, youth or family activities and special events. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Provides customer service to program patrons and the general public. Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed. Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies. Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions, and intervenes when necessary. Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required. Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable. Supervises and assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment. Assists with chlorine residual water tests and with records and charts of water tests and adds chemicals to pool water as directed. Completes incident and accident reports. Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary. Acts as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, supervisors and staff. Attend department and facility staff meetings and in-service training, as necessary. Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard certification and be able to perform the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard at the pool, including First Aid, CPR and AED functions. Previous lifeguard experience is preferred. Must have achieved a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED). High school student applicants are exempt from this requirement. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Must be available to work evenings, holidays and weekends as needed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, bending, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. See within the normal range of vision with or without correction; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
