Boeing Space, Intelligence & Weapons Systems has an exciting opportunity for a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Electrical Engineer to join us as part of our Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS) team located in Haleakala National Park, HI.

The Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS) is a world-class electro-optical facility that boasts dual functionalities, serving as a vital research and development hub as well as a crucial operational mission center. It houses the Department of Defense's largest telescope – the 3.67-meter Advanced Electro Optical System (AEOS), engages in numerous observational programs. The facility's primary mission is dedicated to the United States Space Force, Space Operations Command. The MSSS amalgamates cutting-edge large-aperture tracking optics with advanced visible and infrared sensors, allowing it to gather critical data on near-Earth and deep-space objects. As part of the larger space surveillance network, the MSSS site also hosts assets for the Ground-based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (GEODSS) system, further enhancing its data collection and space tracking capabilities.

As a PLC Electrical Engineer, you will play an integral role in exploring the mysteries of the cosmos through the MSSS. Leveraging your expertise in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), you will design, develop, and maintain the software and hardware that keep our world-class facility running smoothly. You will be at the forefront of writing and testing PLC software in languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagrams, employing specialized tools like Rockwell's RSLogix 5000 or TIA Portal. You'll also play a key role in system integration, testing, and troubleshooting, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our operations. Staying updated with the latest technological advancements, you will have the opportunity to propose and implement innovations that enhance the performance and reliability of the MSSS.

Our expansive on-site resources, including a fully equipped machine shop, state-of-the-art optics laboratories, and advanced electronics laboratories, provide a conducive environment for our dedicated team to continually push the boundaries of space surveillance technology.

Position Responsibilities

  • Documents the requirements of electrical and electronic systems, ensuring thorough understanding and clear communication within the team.

  • Specifies appropriate hardware components to withstand the space environment and ensure system functionality.

  • Develops software that will run on the PLCs, using languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagrams, with the help of specialized PLC programming tools.

  • Conducts comprehensive system testing using both simulation software and hardware testing equipment, ensuring systems meet design specifications and operate safely.

  • Works closely with suppliers and regulatory bodies to ensure hardware components meet requirements, and the system is compliant with relevant standards.

  • Provides ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting for the PLC systems over the MSSS lifecycle, ensuring optimal performance at all times.

  • Keeps up to date with advancements in PLC technology and space systems to propose and implement innovations that enhance MSSS performance and reliability.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at Haleakala National Park, HI .

This worksite operates on a 4/10 schedule. You will work 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday, 10 hours each day.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

  • 1+ years of relevant experience in PLC programming, controls engineering, electrical system design, or a related role.

  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), including writing and testing PLC software in languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagrams.

  • Experience in system integration, testing, and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to work at 10,000ft ASL (above sea level).

  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Understanding of complex electrical systems and their application in a research or industrial setting.

  • Proficiency in using testing and diagnostic equipment, like digital multimeters and oscilloscopes.

  • Experience in a space systems or observatory setting is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team setting.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and standards.

  • Willingness to relocate to Hawaii, if not already residing in the area.

Typical Education/Experience

Associate Engineers

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Experienced Engineers

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation

Summary Pay Range for Associate Engineers: $79,900 - $108,100

Summary Pay Range for Experienced Engineers: $96,050 - $129,950
