Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) Lead Correctional Officer - Dept of Corrections/MRDC - Kyle, SD in Kyle, South Dakota

General Description of Duties: Responsible to the Facility Administrator for the daily operation of the detention facility and the daily routine jail operation. Will monitor the shifts assigned, ensure data is being completed, and be able to address any incidents that may occur during assigned shifts, and other needs pertaining to the operation of the facility.

Specific Duties: 1. Review the status priorities, instruct employees on specific tasks and job techniques, make available written instructions, and give on the job training. 2. Will assist in collection of data, monthly reports, and filing monthly reports. 3. Ensure the upkeep of the facility, report any disciplinary incidents to the facility supervisor, and document the incidents. 4. Review shift logs and ensure shift briefings are completed. 5. Ensure that the detention duties are completed, oversee the entire shifts duties, and address all incidents that occur during the shifts. 6. Ensure that all inmates are always monitored. 7. Assist and complete an investigation of all incidents that occur during shifts. 8. Will develop a positive relationship between the facility and all entities that exist. 9. Will be responsible to ensure to the department that the shifts assigned to: are operating in a professional atmosphere, inmates are monitored, and all incidents are correctly addressed. 10. Willing to complete other duties assigned by the Facility Administrator. May be subjected to unannounced drug tests. 11. Must be willing to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism and maintain a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle. 12. Incumbent is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the drug and alcohol policy as a supervisor and will advise staff of the Zero Tolerance for alcohol and drugs. 13. Work involves abnormal hours, typically on a shift rotation basis, and a variety of moderately difficult assignments. Such assignments require proficiency in the application of correctional skills in supervising Correctional Officers regarding work assignments. 14. Will complete the duties of a Correctional Officer when needed.

Requirements and Knowledge: 1. Knowledge of the body of laws pertaining to corrections, training requirements, program awareness, inmate handbook, adult and juvenile detention standards, Standard Operating Procedures, direct supervision principles, operational activities, constitutional rights of individuals, and Indian civil rights act. 2. Knowledge in the basic principles and techniques of inmate care, direct supervision concept, policies and procedures, inmate management, interpersonal communication concept, and knowledge of first aid including CPR. 3. Ability to instruct and train others in daily facility operations and activities. 4. If claiming Indian Preference must have proof of tribal membership. 5. The incumbent is responsible for keeping their personal lives drug and alcohol free and maintaining a high degree of professionalism. Will be required to take alcohol and drug tests randomly. 6. Knowledge of commonly used federal/tribal laws and OST penal codes governing the incarceration of adult and juvenile offenders. 7. Ability to document reports, maintain accurate records, and communicate verbally with staff and other agencies. 8. Required to pass a physical and medical examination due to medical or physical condition that may interfere or prevent incumbent from performing the duties required. 9. Will possess knowledge of the tribal penal codes, facility policy and procedure manual, and training requirements, and be willing to complete the Supervisory Detention Officers program administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Qualifications: 1. High School Diploma or G.E.D with four (4) years experience working in a Direct Supervision Correctional Facility and have completed the Basic Correctional Officer Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico, or an AA degree in Criminal Justice or a related field and one (1) year experience working in a Correctional Facility and must have completed the Basic Correctional Officer Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico. 2. Must have a valid drivers license. 3. No misdemeanor or convictions in the past year, excluding minor traffic violations. 4. Must have never been convicted of a felony crime.
