Function Statement:
The overall function of this position is responsible for complete overhauls, services, and repairs to numbered/unnumbered equipment. This position is located in the District 07 Unit 071, District 07 Mechanic Shop of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor B. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.
The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:
Specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must possess the ability to work on specialized systems such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic systems on mobile and heavy equipment.
Required License: Louisiana Class “E”
Drug Testing required: Yes
Types of equipment used for the job: Electronic scanners, engineer analyzers, vacuum tester, ignition timer, and air conditioning service equipment.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
40% SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE
Electrical System: Uses diagnostic equipment to locate problems. Repairs/replaces the following parts: taillights, signal lights, revolving lights, horn, alternators, starters, electrical wires, wiring harness, and other electrical system parts. Fuel System: Uses diagnostic equipment to locate problems. Repairs/replaces the following parts: fuel filters, fuel pump, injector pump, fuel lines, and other fuel system parts. Removes and cleans fuel tanks. Hydraulic System: Uses diagnostic equipment to locate problems. Repairs/replaces the following parts: hydraulic control valve, pumps, drive motors, hydraulic lines, cylinders, and other hydraulic system parts. Cooling and Air Conditioning System: Uses visual inspection and knowledge to locate problems. Repairs/replaces the following parts: belts, hoses, water pump, fan clutch, radiator, radiator cap, freeze plugs, accumulator, compressor, coils, and other system parts.
Suspension System: Uses visual inspection and knowledge to locate problems. Repairs/replaces the following parts: shocks, springs, ball joints, tie-rod ends, pitman arm, center link, and other suspension parts.

Performs the following tasks: replacement of spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotors, belts, hoses, manifold crossover pipes, muffler, tailpipes, and other consumable parts. Adjusts valves and ignition timing.
8% Heavy Mobile Equipment 12% Medium to Light Equipment20% ENGINE REPAIRS AND OVERHAULS
Removes and repairs/replaces/overhauls engines in various type of equipment. This includes but is not limited to the following parts: valves, pistons, rings, main and rod bearings, crankshaft, cam shaft, and all other parts of diesel and gasoline engines.
11% Heavy Mobile Equipment 9% Medium to Light Equipment10% BRAKE REPAIRS
Repairs/replaces and overhauls brake shoes, disc pads, wheel cylinders, calipers, brake lines, master cylinders, hydro boosters, hydraulic brake boosters, air lines, anti-lock brake valves, brake diaphragms, rotors, brake drums, and other brake system parts.
5% Heavy Mobile Equipment 5% Medium to Light Equipment5% MISCELLANEOUS:
Cleans working area and tools daily. Provides instruction, assistance, and supervision to lower level mechanics. Assigns tasks to lower level mechanics when they are assisting in major repairs. Provides road service for broken equipment. Road trips also include repairs to the movable pontoon bridge and ferry.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience as a mechanic.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Training as a mechanic from a trade school, vocational-technical school, or military school will substitute for the required experience. Training will be credited in six month increments.

Performs entry level repair/maintenance and inspection related activities on vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
Assists higher level mechanics in working on a variety of mobile equipment and vehicles.
May also be responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as: lawnmowers, string trimmers, outboard motors, etc. Tasks may include spark plug replacement, carburetor cleaning, starter repair, and filter replacement.
Removes and cleans fuel tanks.
May maintain inventory of tools, instruments, and supplies.
