Serco Traffic Management Operator (TMC) - Lake Charles in Lake Charles, Louisiana

Position Description

This role requires dedication to working evening, weekend, and/or holiday shifts, each lasting 12 hours. You may also be on-call and will be eligible for overtime pay.

Our Traffic Management Center Operator position offers the opportunity to assist with Department of Transportation by monitoring roadways and managing traffic events/incidents. The role involves promptly responding to all incident and operational needs within the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and working closely with various agencies and emergency responders. TMC Operators play a crucial role in monitoring video images to detect and verify crashes, debris, and other road hazards, and then providing this information to DOTD personnel, law enforcement, and first responders to assist in the safe clearing and reopening of roads.

As part of this role, you must effectively handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and respond adeptly to emergency situations. Reporting directly to the TMC Supervisor, the responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing Traffic Management (TM) operations, incident management, travel information dissemination, and customer service tasks within the scope of the project.

  • Guiding and dispatching MAP units via radio or phone to locations of road hazards and incidents, providing clear and accurate directions.

  • Communicating with law enforcement, EMS, fire department, or towing services to provide clear, accurate information regarding incidents and the required response.

  • Informing Department personnel statewide about incidents, traffic, road maintenance, construction activity, and weather conditions.

  • Coordinating with other agency and construction staff, and reporting incidents using various media and communication techniques.

  • Supporting all emergency/special events operations, such as severe weather events and high traffic volume events.

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of all system applications and continuously monitoring system devices.

  • Assisting the TMC Supervisor in preparing incident and construction event information for subsequent dissemination.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A high school diploma or GED and at least 6 months of relevant experience in customer service, operations, or a similar field that involves interacting with the public, using phones, and computer equipment. Previous experience in a call center, 911, dispatch, towing, EMS and/or fire, or military operations center is preferred.

  • Proficiency in computer skills, including data entry, internet navigation, and the use of MS Outlook for email communication is required. You should be able to type accurately and check your data entry.

  • Ability to follow directions and communicate calmly, clearly, and effectively with customers, colleagues, state agencies, and the public over the phone and in writing, especially in crisis situations.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. You should be detail-oriented, with strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Availability to work the flexible shifts required, including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call to meet the demands of the TMC operation. Flexibility and adaptability to changing work assignments and responding to requests inside and outside of the division are essential.

  • The ability to use a map-based program and have directional awareness of Louisiana interstate and roadway systems is essential.

  • Completion and passing of the 5-week (paid) training is required.

  • Obtainment of FEMA 100, 200, 700, 800 (Supervisors Only) Certificates is necessary.
