Water Street Mission Bilingual Spiritual Director & Chaplain in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Even as some positions have minimal direct contact with guests, each staff member has an essential role in forming and maintaining Christian community. Job Summary:

The Spiritual Director & Chaplain is an evening-based role that involves providing spiritual guidance, counsel, and support to the guests at Water Street Mission and its ministries. This individual will be involved five-evenings a week in leading evening chapels and hosting Spanish-based teaching and classes/groups. The Spiritual Director will be responsible for promoting spiritual wellbeing by meeting with individuals for pastoral care, spiritual direction, and healing ministry.

FLSA: Full Time, Non-exempt

Essential Functions:

Culture and Values

• Share the Good News of Jesus Christ in words and actions with people we serve, communicating hope and dignity.

• Walk alongside fellow WSM staff in Christian community as we journey toward maturity.

• Encourage restoration in the lives of coworkers and guests, recognizing we are each restored by God to become restorers.

• Work in full coordination with other WSM staff at all times to identify, report and respond appropriately to any potential threats to the safety and wellbeing of guests.

Role Specific Responsibilities

• Proficiency in speaking both English and Spanish.

• Encourage and equip the spiritual formation of guests in an ecumenical environment.

• Ensure guests, especially Spanish-speaking guests, receive appropriate spiritual care in times of personal crises.

• Lead spiritual formation groups and classes for Spanish-speaking guests.

• Walk with guests on their spiritual journey, building awareness of God in the midst of emotional upheaval and trauma.

• Support guests' spiritual journey by providing pastoral care, spiritual direction, and healing ministries.

• Build relationships with guests by engaging them informally in various areas of campus.

• Teach/lead evening chapels in English, up to two times a week.

• Document brief meeting notes after any session with a guest.

• Participate in Pastoral Care and Community Resources meetings, as appropriate.

• In coordination with Community Resources and WSM leadership, participate in initiatives that resource other WSM ministries through the Spiritual Care Team, as well as those that connect WSM to the greater community.

• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

The Spiritual Director & Chaplain position requires some level of professional experience or certification. Preference is given to those with an associate degree in Biblical Studies, Theology, Pastoral Studies, Ministry, or another relevant field. A professional and/or academic certification in Spiritual Direction would also meet this educational requirement. In addition to the required education, a successful candidate should have at least five years of experience in pastoral/spiritual care. Fluency in Spanish and ministry experience with marginalized people groups are essential.
