Description:

Under general supervision, the Labor and Delivery RN will deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation. The RN will collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Nurses effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Labor and Delivery Nurses provide care and support for women before, during and after delivery of the baby. They are responsible for making sure that the medical as well as emotional needs of the patient are met throughout the birthing process. Experience is preferred.

Position Responsibilities:

LDR RN provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Monitors patient throughout (before/during/after) the labor

Monitors contractions and helps patients with breathing techniques.

Performs basic IV and phlebotomy skills.

Cares for patients on Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate and continuous epidural infusion

Reads fetal monitor and ascertains if there is a problem with the baby's heart rate.

Identifies and manages life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients.

Supports and encourages the patient during all phases of labor.

Immediate care of the newborn

Completes required orientation.

Depending on setting, may also:

Float among other clinical areas (MBU and NICU) where qualified and competent.
