General Definition of Work Performs semiskilled work mowing, seeding, planting, pruning, trimming, spraying and fertilizing grass, trees, shrubs, bushes, hedges and flowers, performing a variety of landscaping and other grounds maintenance activities, operating, maintaining and repairing equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Cemetery Supervisor or Beautification Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of rights-of-way, parks, buildings and other public areas. Sows and mows grass; pulls weeds; plants, waters, prunes and trims trees, shrubs, hedges and bushes; maintains and repairs tree containers; removes stumps; maintains irrigation system. Weed eats and edges; rakes leaves. Constructs and maintains planting beds. Removes debris from City grounds; cleans the downtown area; hangs holiday decorations. Pulls excess dirt from new grave sites; refills sunken sites. Operates mowers, tractors and hand tools in performance of tasks; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment. Assists with snow removal and ice control. May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations. Completes any other duties assigned by supervisor. Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates. Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Some knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protecti e equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
