Director Job Duties: .50 FTE

90% Online Programs Management

  • Develop online course development and program guidelines and policies.

  • Curate and maintain a two-year schedule for KU Core.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Dean and Associate Deans to ensure the viability of the program vision and strategy.

  • Collaborate with College leadership on program development plans and processes, maintaining regular communication throughout the program development process.

  • Meet regularly with College Undergraduate Academic Services

  • Work with departments to implement online programming, including making decisions regarding incentives for course development and coordination of course design with the Center for Online and Distance Learning.

  • Coordinate with the Center for Online and Distance Learning to manage course design requests, including setting and reinforcing development expectations with the designing instructor, payment, and management of new initiatives.

  • Oversee College Online email.

Student Success:

  • Meet regularly with Jayhawk Academic Advising advisors for College online students.

  • Collaborate with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to develop and implement programming to enhance student retention and graduation.

  • Facilitate the development of high impact opportunities available to online students in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and other stakeholders.

  • Stay apprised of national trends in student success to ensure best practices and a high level of student retention and satisfaction for students in online programs.

  • Set standards and benchmarks for online student success outreach, retention, and graduation rates, in consultation with appropriate College units and university offices.

Enrollment Management:

  • Collaborate with the Registrar’s office to ensure proper systems are in place to oversee the needs of incoming programs and curriculum.

  • Set the reserve capacity on online courses and strategically manage enrollments in online courses, including using data to make informed decisions on course offerings, course enrollment caps, and reserves.

  • Provide College units with enrollment projections for online courses.

  • Manage enrollment capacity and additional class sections that serve on-campus students.

Communication & Marketing:

  • Collaborate with the Dean’s Office Communication & Marketing team to create and implement a communication plan to increase touch points with online students, manage and update communication tools such as the College Online website and newsletter.

  • Communication regularly with the Dean’s Office, staff, and faculty about programs updates and changes.

  • Collaborate with KU Marketing to ensure that College Online degree programs are represented in Jayhawk Global cohesive marketing strategy.

  • Ensure marketing is aligned with the KU brand, Jayhawk Global, and is coordinated with enrollment management, admissions.

10% Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications:

  1. PhD.

  2. Tenure-line or career specialty faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

  3. Relevant online education experience.

  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently to manage online programs and courses, conceive, design, and implement new programs.

  5. Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners and effectively manage relationships.

  6. Proven ability to communicate effectively with multiple constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Leadership experience related to student issues, with direct student contact at the college or university level.

  2. Experience with online degree programs and/or online course design.

  3. Proven ability to innovate and bring about positive change and obtain buy-in.

  4. Experience working with faculty, university governance, and curriculum.

  5. Knowledge of KU and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' requirements, policies, and procedures.

  6. Demonstrated experience with relevant computerized student information and communication systems.

Position Overview:

INTERNAL ONLY: Tenure-line or career specialty faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks a .50 FTE Director for Online Education, who is either a tenure-line faculty member or a career specialty faculty member such as a Teaching Professor, to manage and maintain the quality of current online degree programs, KU Core, and online offerings. This position will collaborate with the Executive Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College Dean’s Office to manage and implement a prioritized plan to maximize the College Online programs, which will be included in Jayhawk Global. This includes developing and implementing strategic ideas to enhance student retention and graduation for online students and identifying online program development and growth opportunities based on market-demand. The Director will consult with units on campus such as Jayhawk Global, Jayhawk Academic Advising, College Undergraduate Academic Services, and the College Office of Graduate Affairs. The Director remains current in trends in online education and student outreach. Performs other duties as assigned.

This position reports to the College Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
