Job Title: Custodian (Day/Night)

Department: Maintenance

Reports to: Maintenance Director, Building Principal

Classification: Classified / Non-Exempt

This position will work 3:00-11:00 pm

Summary

To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required.   1. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  2. Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  3. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are able to be opened from the inside and all panic bots are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  4. Maintains lunchroom for meals. Sweeps and mops floors, disinfects tables between shifts and other responsibilities as assigned by the principal. (day)
  5. Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture. (night)
  6. Cleans corridors after school each day (night), or during the day as warranted. (day)
  7. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilets, and floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  8. Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
  9. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  10. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  11. Cleans all chalkboards and/or white boards at least once a week.
  12. Makes such minor building repairs, as he/she is capable of.
  13. Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal.
  14. Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
  15. Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the principal.
  16. Assumes responsibility for the opening or closing of the building each school day. At the beginning of the day ensures the doors are secure for student safety after all students have arrived. At the end of the day determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  17. Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties.
  18. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  19. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  20. Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  21. Performs the tasks of summer cleanup such as stripping and waxing floors and preparing the classrooms for the new year.
  22. Conducts periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
  23. Snow removal is required during the winter season.
  24. Hours will change during summer months. When school is out of session night custodians hours will change to the daytime.
  25. May be required to come in and fill in the absence of a day custodian as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High School D ploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Skills and Abilities

Language

The individual must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals; write routine reports; respond appropriately to requests from staff members.

Computation

Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and perform those operations using weight, volume, and distance units of measurement.

Reasoning

The individual must have the ability to comprehend and follow basic written and verbal instruction and solve practical problems.

Technology

Basic computer skills are required.

Additional Skills and Abilities

Must maintain a neat appearance which includes good hygiene and well groomed. Uniforms will be kept clean and free of any damages. Hair, including facial hair, will be clean, well-groomed and neat. The employee must have a pleasant attitude with students, parents, and staff. Must maintain confidentiality when required by law or policy. Must be able to multi-task in a sometimes chaotic environment.

The individual is required to constantly move throughout the building and school grounds; regularly required to reach, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, twist, or sit. The employee will frequently push or pull items such as tables and equipment. Must be able to speak and hear in both high and low noise levels.

Lifting

Regularly required to lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally items weighing up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and occasionally works outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee will frequently work alone and will occasionally work irregular or extended hours. There is also a moderate risk of exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students. The noise level of the work environment is usually low but can occasionally be loud.
