Shire Senior Program Manager in Lexington, Massachusetts

Primary Duties

The Global Program Manager (GPM) position is a high impact, leadership role responsible for key elements of program strategy and cross-functional execution within Shire’s Early-stage Global Product Team (EPT) or Late-stage Global Product Teams (LPT). The GPM role requires a talented individual with proven expertise in leading cross-functional teams and driving product strategy, planning and program execution. The GPM, in partnership with the Global Development Lead (GDL) and Product Strategy Lead (PSL), will drive program management and ensure clear and timely communication of program strategy, implementation plans and program progress. The GPM will work to ensure the cross-functional teams operate effectively with positive global team dynamics driving product development. The GPM is expected to be knowledgeable about the overall development program in order to be strategic in planning, program progress oversight, communication and process management, delivering high quality program management expertise, leadership and other high value services that support the team and improve the probability of program success.

The GPM, together with the GDL and PSL, provides the strategic vision and guides the team in developing integrated plans to successfully execute the strategy. The GPM will be responsible for one or more programs with clearly defined objectives.

The GPM will:

  • Work closely with his/her manager and/or lead PM on the program, but with minimal direct routine supervision

  • Coordinate and drive the planning processes for the product/program in partnership with the GDL/PSL, i.e. Target Product Profile, Product Strategy, Product and Program Plans, go/no go Stage Gate Review criteria, Lifecycle Management, Brand Plans, Budgeting, Long Range Planning

  • Work closely with the GDL/PSL to facilitate the elaboration, approval and execution of the global program strategy, as well as facilitate the decision-making process for their development program(s) Work independently to provide best-in-class operations and program management expertise to drive team members towards excellence in execution.

  • Maintain the overall development plans and enterprise R&D portfolio inputs

  • Collaborate with GDL, PSL and functional team members to ensure coordinated evaluation of product opportunities and/or scenarios and development of comprehensive, integrated recommendations (e.g. to Governance Committees) and strategic and operational product plans based on program defined objectives. Facilitate collection, alignment and validation of sales and marketing budget ensuring alignment to the product/program strategy

  • Facilitate cross-functional team meetings (agendas, minutes, tracking actions, etc.)

  • Facilitate team goal setting and tracking to ensure adherence to plan and strategy, and end of year team evaluation process

  • Coordinate communications to ensure team member alignment

  • Issue and present reports to senior management on a routine basis

  • Provide clear direction on product development requirements to meet expectations of external customers and business stakeholders

  • Be responsible for making decisions regarding the appropriate risk when there is substantial program impact

  • Lead other cross-functional projects (either strategic and/or operational) as required

  • Reinforce team operating principles to maximize alignment within the team and with other functions.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in drug development and/or commercialization in a pharmaceutical environment

  • Minimum of 3years of cross-functional program management experience

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex cross-functional teams and processes and work without routine supervision to deliver key accountabilities

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent proficiency a plus

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of global drug product development and commercialization in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong understanding and competency in planning processes and decision making

  • Demonstrated experience using standard program management tools and software including integrated development plans, timelines, risk management, and budget development and monitoring

  • Training, coaching and leadership experience

  • Demonstrated finance and business acumen

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or related field required; advanced degree in life sciences or MBA preferred

  • Fluency (spoken and written) in English

Complexity and Problem Solving

Guiding cross-functional product teams through program planning and execution and leading teams in issue resolution and risk management is inherently complex. This requires a high level of problem solving capability and ability to balance competing priorities and quickly and objectively drive the team towards a path which maximizes value.

Working with a cross-functional team to develop robust arguments and tactics supporting recommendations to senior leaders and key stakeholders.

This role requires the incumbent to rationalize both strategically and tactically, and be able to present recommendations to senior leaders and key stakeholders.

Accountable to a Director or Senior Director within Global Program Management.

  • GDL/PSL Members of the EPT/LPT

  • Colleagues in the Global Program Management Department

  • Functional representatives (R&D, Tech Ops, Finance, Commercial, etc.) across the organization
