Description of Job: Valent Biosciences is seeking a Research Scientist to design, execute and analyze fermentation experiments at our Biorational Research Center in Libertyville, IL. The Research Scientist will conduct studies to support our R&D pipeline of new metabolite- and microorganism-based sustainable product solutions for the fields of crop enhancement, crop protection, rhizosphere, biostimulants, public health and forest health. Additionally, the role will contribute to the success of the Fermentation Group by providing support through the acquisition and maintenance of capital assets

Principal Responsibilities:

• Execute and document lab and pilot scale experiments to develop robust processes of microbial fermentations intended for scale up to production.

• Execute and document experiments to define robust fermentation processes.

• Perform statistical analyses on experimental data and present key findings.

• Author work instructions and contribute to standard operating procedures

• Complete lab support functions and work to train junior team members.

• Define workflows and identify opportunities for efficiency improvement.

• Conduct all work in strict compliance with applicable safety and regulatory requirements, standard operating practices, and/or guidelines.

Knowledge Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience in submerged culture fermentations of microorganisms, including filamentous fungi, to increase metabolite productivity using aseptic techniques.

• Understanding of fermentation control methodology and terminology.

• Hands-on experience operating fermentation vessels, from 250mL to 100L, including SIP systems.

• Proficiency in Microsoft suite and fermentation control software.

• Understanding of statistical design/results analysis, preferably using JMP (or similar statistical software).

• Excellent communication, documentation, and organization skills. Programming skills a plus.

• Capability to identify and define workflows without explicit assignment.

• Desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment and work within a team.

• Willingness to foster a culture of diversity and inclusion.

• Ability to lift 25 lbs. and stand for 5+ hours of workday.

Education:

• B.S. in Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or related discipline with 2-5 years of experience

Travel: 5%
