Bloomberg BloombergNEF Grids & Utilities Team Leader in London, United Kingdom

BloombergNEF Grids & Utilities Team Leader

London

Posted May 21, 2024 - Requisition No. 125431

BloombergNEF (BNEF) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to lead our global analysis team covering power grids and utilities. You have a passion for energy systems and the transition to a low-carbon economy, and want to help your talented team reach its full potential. You have strong quantitative skills, an understanding of power grids and/or related technologies, and you love to explain complex subjects to others. You can constructively critique others’ analysis and edit written reports. Teamwork is important to you, and you understand how healthy debates inform solid conclusions.

At BloombergNEF (BNEF), we help our clients gain a clear perspective on the technologies and financial, economic and policy trends driving the energy transformation. BNEF is online, on mobile and on the Terminal. We are a subscription service providing research and analysis to key stakeholders across the energy value chain. For more information about BNEF, go to https://about.bnef.com/ ( https://about.bnef.com/ ) (https://about.bnef.com/ (https://about.bnef.com/ (https://about.bnef.com/ (https://about.bnef.com/) )).

Our team:

You will be based in our London office, working as part of a global research team at BloombergNEF (BNEF) – the world's leading independent provider of analysis, tools, data and research to decision makers leading change in the energy system. Our data-driven research helps clients stay on top of developments across the energy sector, supported by the unique depth and breadth of the Bloomberg Terminal and bnef.com platforms.

Electricity grids stand at the center of decarbonization efforts. Regulatory reforms and new transmission and distribution projects are needed to accommodate the immense growth in renewable energy deployment and new electricity demand. Resiliency is front and center as utilities seek to manage extreme weather impacts. New technologies and business models are being deployed to manage the increasingly complex grid, while electrification and the need for flexibility are fundamentally changing the way energy systems balance and operate.

This critical but complex area requires a combination of new technologies, policies, business processes and market designs. The grids and utilities team covers how the electricity grid will evolve to support a decarbonizing world. We forecast grid capacity, analyze the adoption of emerging grid technologies, assess policy changes, analyze supply chains, and build country- and regional-level views on power grid buildout.

BNEF team ethos:

To succeed at BNEF we need people who can work in an independent manner and show initiative to develop their own viewpoints, yet be collaborative with colleagues. We don’t rely on the status quo, we look for innovative yet pragmatic thinking that turns big ideas into real insights and impact. Working at BNEF sometimes feels chaotic; we need teams that are both dynamic and structured to generate the unique perspectives our clients really value. Our teams are diverse, creative, focused, and fun!

We will trust you to:

  • Expand and guide the scope of our global grids coverage across the firm, identifying and diagnosing short-, medium- and long-term trends in the sector

  • Guide and develop a talented group of individuals with diverse skillsets to form a coherent and collaborative team unit

  • Be an expert on the power sector, both internally and externally

  • Work with a wide range of teams across BloombergNEF to help build a holistic and balanced view of the current energy system and pathway towards a net-zero economy

  • Effectively communicate your views and findings through reports, datasets and models, public presentations, and direct client interactions

  • Ensure the quality of the output produced by the team – both in terms of checking the underlying analysis and editing written reports

You'll need to have:

  • Five to 10 years of relevant industry experience

  • A Bachelor's or advanced degree in a related field, such as Engineering, Business, Economics or Physics

  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple tasks

  • A deep understanding of power networks and the drivers that influence grid development and interconnection queues, including both regulatory and economic drivers

  • A natural aptitude for collaboration and strong interpersonal skills

  • Rigorous attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, an aptitude for authoring reports and presentations including the ability to communicate complex information concisely

  • A track record of thinking critically and developing thoughtful opinions by cutting through the noise of data, extracting key patterns, applying skepticism to the claims of industry participants and asking insightful questions

  • A strong interest in decarbonization and in solving complex system challenges at a global level

  • Great instincts for working with clients, and how to use research and analysis to answer their most pressing questions

We would love to see:

  • Prior experience working in planning, strategy, engineering or operations for transmission or distribution businesses, power grid technologies or grid services

  • Academic or professional background in electrical engineering

  • Experience with large datasets and building complex models

  • Advanced technical skills, including experience using Excel, SQL and Python

  • Prior experience in people management
