Los Alamos National Laboratory Chemical Diagnostics & Engineering Research Technologist (Research Technologist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated person for the position of Research Technologist. C-CDE is an applied technology organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in stockpile manufacturing and support, surveillance, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, and the environment. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering. C-CDE engages in areas important to Laboratory missions, including material characterization and development and environmental mitigation. The highly interdisciplinary nature of these activities requires scientists and engineers who can seamlessly operate across academic disciplines. The successful applicant will work both collaboratively and independently on C-CDE projects, and with the Chemical Certification and Compatibility Laboratory (C3Lab).

The Chemistry Research Technologist will be responsible for supporting research across several scientific disciplines in support of research and development (R&D) activities specifically related to Analytical Chemistry, Material Analysis, and Trace Element Analysis, with applications in materials science, polymers, environmental samples. The position will require direct interface with staff scientists in carrying out collaborative work, and potential oversight of more junior lab workers. Independently generate analytical reports and present results to program sponsors

This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or Research Technologist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience and independence operating and doing method development with three or more of the following analytical techniques: FTIR, XRF, GCMS, XPS, ICP-MS/OES, UV-vis, spark-OES, IC, UPLC, particle sizing, elemental analysis, quantitative and qualitative assays.

  • Demonstrated experience with vacuum systems and residual gas analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience and independence with hands-on sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis resulting in reports or published manuscripts.

  • Experience with data analysis software tools such as Origin graphing and Microsoft Office products.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including technical communications.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.

  • Demonstrated experience and comfort with hands-on calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instrumentation identified above.

  • Demonstrated experience in organizing, processing, analyzing, presenting, and reporting large and complex data sets.

  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing analytical instrumentation.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with separations and analytical techniques.

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and demonstrated analytical chemistry experience within a Quality Controlled / Quality Assurance framework.

  • Extensive experience troubleshooting and repairing analytical instrumentation.

Education/Experience for Research Technologist 1: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field from an accredited college or university and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Research Technologist 2: Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field from an accredited college or University and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Quality control chemist with experience in evaluating samples for compliance to published standards or material specification requirements.

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

  • Experience performing laboratory equipment or instrument specification, procurement, assembly, modification, maintenance, and repair.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
