Los Alamos National Laboratory Employee Relations Specialist 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

This position will report directly to the HR-ER Group Leader and will be a key member of the team responsible for a variety of employee relations activities with a focus on workplace investigations. The Employee Relations team is a highly collaborative team and works closely with legal counsel, the Human Resources Division Office, and other partners around the Laboratory.

In this role you will be responsible for conducting timely and accurate workplace investigations into allegations of misconduct, including, but not limited to harassment (including sexual harassment), discrimination, retaliation, insubordination, workplace violence, substance abuse, safety and security violations, and violations of LANL policy or procedure. You will be writing reports summarizing investigative findings and briefing management on those findings. You can expect to work closely with, and effectively advise, management, HR personnel, and other relevant parties during the investigation process.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise

Advanced level knowledge of employee relations best practices and procedures. Advanced level knowledge of legal requirements affecting employee relations administration, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, ADA, and FMLA, etc. Advanced level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating factual allegations, and recommending effective solutions to problems affecting employee relations administration. Excellent skills with research and analysis of complex issues.

Communication

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with drafting complex written reports. Proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel, including senior-level personnel.

Tact and Time Management

Ability to exercise good judgment and appropriate discretion in matters of high sensitivity. Experience in defusing emotions and managing conversations in difficult situations. Ability to work under pressure, often under tight deadlines.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Clearance is desirable

  • An advanced degree in law, human resources, or a related field is preferred. Professional certifications such as SHRM or SPHR are desirable.

Work Environment:

Location

Work Location : The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 Year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-A/@Aimages/file) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
