The Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group in the Chemistry Division offers paid graduate student internships in a variety of Nuclear and Radiochemistry projects. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.
Examples of project topics in Nuclear and Radiochemistry include, but are not limited to:
Radiochemistry and separation science applications
Applications of advanced radiation spectrometry
Signature science for nuclear forensics and nuclear security
Nuclear nonproliferation and safeguards science
Statistics and data science relevant to nuclear security, nonproliferation, and forensics
Managing budget, staffing, or timelines of facility or other projects in core research facilities.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Physical Science, Engineering, Statistics, or Business-related discipline. Examples include:
Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or Physics
Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering graduate students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a graduate degree program.
Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Education/Experience: Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in a Physical Science, Engineering, Statistics, or Business-related discipline. Examples of disciplines of greatest interest to the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group include: Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or Physics. Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (or full time equivalent). Candidates must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
Desired Qualifications:
Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.
Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
Computer programming in support of scientific data acquisition or analysis in areas relevant to Nuclear and Radiochemistry.
Experimental techniques currently used within your selected physical science subfield.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
