As the "front door" to the nation's premier national laboratory, the Bradbury Science Museum has been welcoming guests to discover LANL's innovative advances since 1953. Recognizing the importance of connecting directly with our neighbors, in 2022 the museum launched the Challenge Tomorrow trailer program to provide dynamic STEM education across the state. Bringing some of the most exciting elements of LANL's many programs directly into communities, budding scientists, students, and families interact with our friendly Challenge Tomorrow Ambassadors and explore the amazing possibilities of science while they try out real world tools and tech.

Challenge Tomorrow events are centered around two cutting-edge engagement trailers that contain experiential areas, outfitted with interactive hand-on components, that embody the themes Health, Space, Materials, Environment and Earth Sciences. The coordinator works with Challenge Ambassadors (subject matter experts from across LANL who are trained to work with the public) who engage with guests of all ages and simultaneously highlight current laboratory activities while inspiring the potential workforce of the future.

The coordinator will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of program which includes, but is not limited to, researching and scheduling visit events; coordinating with host venues and preparing appropriate setups for various audiences; arranging for transportation of trailers and associated materials; working with BSM staff and contractors to ensuring condition of trailers and full-operational capacity of program components before, during, and after events; building membership of Challenge Ambassador corps; scheduling Challenge Ambassadors for events and facilitating their travel, attendance, and support during events; and ensuring proper storage of trailers between events.

The coordinator will work with BSM leadership to oversee the budget for running this program, including the contracted services for trailer hauling, storage, and upkeep as well as the maintenance, updates, and upkeep of interactive exhibits.

As the program is now moving into its next phase of operations, the coordinator will also work with BSM leadership and LANL partners in envisioning appropriate updates to the various represented themes and programs as well as to expand the engagement reach to the broadest possible audiences at appropriate venues.

This is a full time (40 hours/week) position which, because of the dynamic and on-site nature of programs and events, will necessitate a flexible work schedule that includes extended workdays, some weekends, holidays, and evenings.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Event Management

You will need experience coordinating all aspects of a series of events and carrying out engagement programs including managing budgets, scheduling of venues and personnel, coordinating logistics for traveling between locations, and overseeing contracts for services.

Partnership Building

You will need experience in developing and nurturing effective external and internal customer relationships in a professional manner. These include partners engaged in: workforce development; representing or interfacing with K-12, after school programs, and higher education; various internal support organizations including Community Partnerships Office, Logistic, Finance, Acquisition Services, etc.; carrying out various functional operations with contractors.

Teamwork/Communication

You need a record of successful teamwork and consensus building across organizational and program boundaries. This includes excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as evidenced by successful internal and external interactions and by experience holding briefings and presentations, and the ability to oversee scheduling of individuals, contractors, and internal/external entities.

Problem Solving

You should demonstrate your ability to work independently while maintaining excellent quality in daily operational work, as well as the fine-tuned skills of organizing, prioritizing, and following through to completion of multiple projects. You must be self-motivated and willing to take initiative to identify issues, reflect on potential outcomes for various actions, and carry out solutions. You should demonstrate your ability to work well as a leader, a team player, strong customer and interpersonal skills and a record of mitigating and/or dealing effectively with conflict.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and

5 years of demonstrated experience managing a program or programs with complex logistical challenges or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the breadth of work of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the diverse skill sets across the workforce.

• Formal or informal science education training and/or experience in teaching.

• Museum studies background and/or public engagement interpretation experience.

• Practical experience coordinating events, managing volunteers, and supporting workforce development.

• Practical experience and understanding of computer hardware and software systems, including interactive displays.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to speak, sitting, standing, typing and keyboarding, lift 50 lbs., and work outdoors for extended periods of time with appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) in both hot and cold conditions.

Work Environment: Domestic/foreign travel, Operation of motor vehicles

Location : This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
