Los Alamos National Laboratory Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Actinide Analytical Chemistry Group (C-AAC) of the Chemistry Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated person for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate . The successful candidate will work with Applications Research and Development Team in C-AAC to help implement and expand Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) capabilities in the study of actinide materials to support production goals. An ideal candidate will have strong experimental and instrumentation skills in both analytical chemistry and optical spectroscopy. In this position, the candidate will apply scientific principles and methods to solve complicated technical problems; develop novel techniques or principles; analyze and interpret data.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong technical background in one or more of the following areas: physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, radiochemistry, material science, or optical spectroscopy.

  • Demonstrated experience in optical spectroscopy and analytical characterization techniques, for examples, LIBS, XRF, Raman, UV-Vis, IR, SEM, TEM, Fluorescence, Mass Spectrometry.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience designing and conducting experiments.

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research through peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by publications, presentations, and report development.

  • Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.

Education: The minimum requirement of a Ph.D. from an accredited program in physics, chemistry, material science or closely related field, earned within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or specialized training working with radioactive and nuclear materials.

  • Experience working in a glovebox within a radiological and/or nuclear facility.

  • Experience with laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including specification, assembly, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

  • Active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500.
