Los Alamos National Laboratory Manufacturing Engineer (R&D Engineer 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or R&D Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Prototype Fabrication Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides experience and expertise in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's stockpile stewardship efforts. The successful candidate will be joining a dedicated staff of engineers, programmers, journeyman machinists, dimensional inspectors, and quality assurance professionals supporting multiple programs with manufactured components ranging in size, and materials to include those with radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, and/or other hazardous characteristics for a broad customer base, both within LANL and within the Nuclear Weapons Complex.
R&D Engineer 3 ($115,500 - $194,900)
The manufacturing engineer level 3 will be responsible for both the development of manufacturing processes for new product, and improvement of existing product lines. You will provide engineering leadership and technical management to develop, maintain, and improve manufacturing processes, equipment and tooling, and sequence and flow of operations to produce components and products. You will lead improvement projects through execution, realization of benefits and final documentation. You will also oversee equipment modifications, upgrades, and automation. You will work both internally and cross-organizationally with other engineers and personnel to meet product specifications and quality requirements by requested due dates.
R&D Engineer 4 ($138,700 - $240,500)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer level 4 will be required to:
Lead, coordinate, and integrate broad large-scale technical engineering projects related primarily to machining, fabrication and metrology, across multi organizational entities and personnel to meet defined objectives and deliverables. You will serve as a technical resource and mentor to staff across the organization, including overseeing the work of others. You will establish priorities, provide oversight for all incoming manufacturing requests, and ensure work continuity through shops based on priority and quality for meeting customer deliverables. This process involves the review of complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacturing of parts and ensuring that adequate definition accompanies the job initiation requests before work can be routed to the appropriate machine shop and machinists.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Expertise: You will have thorough knowledge and experience in design and manufacturing of mechanical components. This will require you to have comprehensive knowledge in the areas of manufacturing to include machining, welding/joining, forming, and dimensional inspection/characterization. You must be able to read and interpret manufacturing drawings and have familiarity with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). You will understand CNC programming, machine tool setup and integration, tooling, fixture, and gauge design. You must have CAD/CAM experience, strong knowledge of setting up and operating CNC equipment, and the ability to troubleshoot manufacturing processes.
Project Management: Demonstrated experience planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives; establishing scope, schedule, and budget; ensuring worker qualification and authorization; and ensuring that administrative and operating procedures are current. You will have experience for the research and acquisition of machines to improve capacity and capability of manufacturing operations. This requires the ability to identify process improvement opportunities, establish both a baseline for those opportunities and project improvements to the baseline. Analyze performance and quality metrics.
Process Improvement: Demonstrated ability to provide design arrangement of machines for efficient and productive layout as well as provide design sequences of operations and specific procedures for the manufacturing of parts. Proven ability to apply modern engineering and manufacturing approaches to shorten the design-to-deployment lifecycle for an experimental or prototype design project.

Expert level knowledge of engineering methods and processes supporting advanced machining operations on complex components and exotic materials.
Demonstrated success in providing technical and professional manufacturing expertise to less experienced staff through active mentoring and training.
Demonstrated success in being a contributing member and lead engineer on a research and development project team, resulting in the successful deployment of improved manufacturing and metrology process and equipment capabilities.
Demonstrated professional level experience with the implementation of a quality infrastructure for certification activities.
Education/Experience at the lower level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Demonstrated experience working with unique and hazardous materials in a manufacturing environment.
Weapons engineering experience within the NNSA Weapons Complex.
Demonstrated professional level of understanding of weapons physics design.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
