Los Alamos National Laboratory Nondestructive Examination Engineer - Radiographic Testing (RT) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services - Operations (ES-OPS) Group as a Nondestructive Examination (NDE) Engineer with experience in Radiographic Testing (RT). The Nondestructive Examination Team is responsible for implementing LANL's NDE Program, and within this position you will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nondestructive Examination Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

The selected candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Expert for the NDE program at LANL and will be responsible for aiding fellow laboratory personnel with implementing the NDE Program as required by national consensus codes and standards, recognized quality standards, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations.

You will apply your expertise in Radiographic Testing in support of nuclear weapons component manufacturing. Your expertise in film and digital radiography will allow you to teach and qualify technicians performing radiography in the principles of industrial radiography and image interpretation.

Nondestructive Examination Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

In addition to the duties described above, as a Level 3 you will be expected to contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards, facilitate technical growth of the Institutional NDE Program, make visionary organizational contributions to improve NDE processes and applications, assist the Team Lead with work planning, staffing projects, and hiring.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Nondestructive Examination Engineer 2

  • ASNT Level III Certification in the Radiographic method, with experience as a certified Level II or Level III in the use of both film and digital radiography

  • Ability to certify as at least Level II in the Liquid Penetrant (PT) NDE methods with future certification as a Level III expected

  • Ability to write procedures for the performance of NDE

  • The willingness to travel as required (typically less than 10%)

  • Analyze, summarize and/or review data; report findings; interpret results and make recommendations

  • Ability to coach and mentor junior NDE personnel

Nondestructive Examination Engineer 3

In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • ASNT Level III Certification in one or more of the following NDE methods: Ultrasonic (UT), MT, PT, Leak Test (LT)

  • Experience with Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing

  • Understanding of the administration of an ASNT-compliant qualification and certification program for NDE personnel

Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at Level 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

This position may be subject to 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. The DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Level II Certification in one or more additional NDE method per ASNT SNT-TC-1A

  • American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector or Senior Certified Welding Inspector

  • Experience working at a DOE site

  • Experience working in construction or fabrication environment, e.g., ASME vessel fabrication, structural fabrication/erection, etc.

  • National Standard (ASTM, ASNT) Committee and/or Code Committee participation, or interest in representing LANL in these activities

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

DOE 426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
