Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Management System Software Developer (Computing Systems Professional 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce War Reserve (WR) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission.

The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in a matrixed structure. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe, and reliable WR detonator products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Weapon System Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on uniquely challenging, high-consequence national security objectives. DP's Production Integration Office (DP-5) is one of five groups in the Detonator Production Agency and includes the Production Support team and Database Administrators/Developers of the Secure Operations Management System (SOMS), used for production execution. SOMS is an in-house built software package used for document & records management, inventory tracking & use, equipment use, process control and quality data collection. We are seeking highly qualified candidates to be considered for a career opportunity as a secure operations management system database professional - software developer.

Computing Systems Professional 2 ($83,900 - $ 136,600)

The selected candidate will provide database design, development and programming support for the division's primary execution system used for collection of all quality and manufacturing data required for product sale. This requires collaboration with customers including quality, manufacturing, engineering, and project management. Work duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Creating, and improving system features, ensuring the system performs as intended

  • Completing timely resolution of issues ensuring the system performs as intended.

  • Providing support in the maintenance and integrity of the data required for product submittal.

  • Interfacing with customers to assess needs, capture requirements, and provide general guidance on the possibilities within SOMS

  • Planning, designing, documenting, and implement program development solutions to support new requirements.

  • Develop plans for installing, configuring and troubleshooting Secure Operations Management System (SOMS) upgrades

  • Develop and coordinate Software Quality testing to ensure new functionality performs to requirements.

Computing Systems Professional 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to the duties outlined at the lower level, the Computing Systems Professional 3 will be required to:

  • Manage technical projects to fulfill customer technical needs.

  • Research emerging technologies, new industry trends, hardware and software tools and solutions.

  • Proactively resolve underlying root causes of ongoing or recurring issues within SOMS database or uses.

  • Mentoring and training fellow team members in basic to advanced SOMS database administration.

  • Provide informational updates on new tools, features and improvements as they are implemented for use by training and/or customers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Development and Integration: Knowledge of software & application development methodologies, tools, processes, integration, and testing; Knowledge of database design, development, management, and business process integration. Familiarity with databases such as FileMaker Pro, MS SQL Server, or MS Access. Attention to detail, problem solving, and critical thinking to preserve data integrity.

Hardware and Systems: Knowledge of hardware, operating systems, and client server principles.

Collaboration: Ability to successfully collaborate with DP team members and other customers in, at times, high stress and/or chaotic environments. Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and multitask as needed.

Customer Focused: Skill in working closely with customers from across the organization to identify, prioritize and troubleshoot issues to resolve problems and implement win-win solutions.

Communication: Demonstrated effective communication (verbal and written), and the ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms.

Continuous Improvement: Knowledge of continuous improvement (CI) methodologies, coupled with a mindset that is always looking for opportunities to improve.

Additional Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Software Development and Integration: Extensive knowledge of software & application development methodologies, tools, processes, integration, and testing. Demonstrated experience in database design, development and management and business process integration. Attention to detail, problem solving, and critical thinking to preserve data integrity.

Project Management: Demonstrated success in project management including specifying, scheduling, testing and implementation of software development solutions/releases/upgrades.

Hardware and Systems: Extensive knowledge and experience of hardware, operating systems, and client server principles.

Level 2 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Level 3 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in production manufacturing environments.

  • Experience with JavaScript and JSON data format.

  • Experience with database migration, performance tuning, and optimization.

  • Good interpersonal skills and communication with all levels of an organization.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
