Los Alamos National Laboratory Rapid Prototype Development and Fabrication Technician (Development and Fabrication Tec 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Automaton and Process Controls Group (E-3) is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, process control systems, machine control systems, and safety systems used for the Plutonium Sustainment and The Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System programs as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. This is a junior-level technician position. Principal responsibilities will be to design, develop, assemble and install electrical/electronic systems and control systems while following appropriate engineering standards. Some of these activities will be performed in the plutonium facility.
This position will be filled at either the Job Title Lower/Higher level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Development and Fabrication Tec 3 $57,800 - $89,500
Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:
Provide support in the areas of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing.
Manage testing facilities and equipment.
Provide support for collecting data and running tests.
Interpret engineering drawings and provide knowledgeable input.
Development and Fabrication Tec 4 $69,500 - $110,300
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, candidate will:
Provide training in the areas of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing.
Write safety procedures for tests and test equipment.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Electrical Technology
Working knowledge in electrical systems, electronics, engineering standards, and control systems. Experience and knowledge of equipment rack design, fabrication, assembly, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical/electronic/control systems. Ability to use standard shop tools such as soldering irons, crimpers, drills, punches etc., and to provide basic mechanical assembly of equipment racks.
Schematics
Knowledge and demonstrated experience reading/following mechanical and electrical schematics.
System Use and Maintenance
Familiar with the use of electronic test equipment (scopes, meters, etc.) for troubleshooting control systems.
Team Dynamics
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professional technicians, including the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
Communication
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
Safety
Commitment in the areas of safety, security, quality, and environment.

Electrical Technology
Advanced knowledge in electrical systems, electronics, engineering standards, and control systems. Experience and knowledge of equipment rack design, fabrication, assembly, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical/electronic/control systems. Knowledgeable of National Electrical Code installation and design requirements.
Schematics
Working knowledge and demonstrated experience reading/modifying/following mechanical and electrical schematics.
System Use and Maintenance
Demonstrated experience using and maintaining electrical, pneumatic, vacuum, and/or hydraulic systems, including the ability to develop technical solutions to complex problems related to equipment/system usage and/or maintenance. Familiar with the use of electronic test equipment (scopes, meters, etc.) for troubleshooting control systems.
Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Knowledgeable in the areas of programmable logic controller (PLC) design and installation, Human Machine Interface (HMI) operation, and communications protocols.
Knowledge of the theory and operation of field transducers such as flowmeters, valves, thermocouples, etc.
Knowledgeable of National Electrical Code installation and design requirements
Experience with CAD design tools such as AutoCAD Electrical.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
