Los Alamos National Laboratory Team Leader, Institutional Tax (CNTL-ITR) (Accounting Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled and experienced Accounting Manager 3 to lead our Institutional Tax team within the Controller Institutional Tax and Retirement Accounting (CNTL-ITR) group. Reporting directly to the Group Leader, the Accounting Manager 3 will manage day-to-day operations, drawing on extensive tax expertise and strong leadership abilities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence and possess exceptional communication and collaboration skills to effectively mentor and support the team. This role will focus on developing and enhancing processes, reinforcing controls, and improving the visibility of team deliverables. An essential aspect of this position is leveraging technology to streamline workflows, thereby reducing manual efforts and ensuring timely compliance.
Key Responsibilities
The selected individual will oversee tax compliance across various domains, including gross receipts tax, corporate income tax, payroll tax and foreign national and vendor tax. This position requires oversight and accurate reporting for several states' sales and use tax returns, primarily focusing on compliance in filing NM gross receipts tax. Additionally, the position requires accurate and timely filing of Forms W-2 and IRS Form 941 for over 18,000 employees, as well as managing state income tax withholding and state unemployment filings for employees working nationwide. This position will also involve collaborating with relevant stakeholders to compile tax data and file corporate federal Form 1065 and various state tax returns, with a focus on ensuring all tax-related matters are addressed with precision and adherence to compliance standards.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Management
Demonstrated leadership in a financial organization responsible for a major functional financial area, including compliance, policy implementation, and risk management. Advanced knowledge of personnel policies and procedures, with expertise in selection, training, performance evaluation, salary administration, and career development. Broad understanding of EEO/diversity, staffing, and organizational development. Extensive experience in strategic decision-making and the ability to identify and implement process improvements.
Accounting Experience
Extensive knowledge and experience in interpreting and applying IRS regulations, applicable state tax statutes, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to business and accounting practices, with a strong emphasis on compliance requirements. Advanced experience and demonstrated success in an accounting function, with the ability to interpret and apply organizational policies and ensure compliance with government regulations, such as IRS regulations, ERISA, Department of Labor (DOL) regulations, Statement of Audit Standards (SAS), and Accounting Standards Updates. Advanced experience in researching complex issues in the areas of tax, reviewing and signing off on tax returns and financial statements. A proven track record in identifying and establishing strong internal controls, conducting analytical reviews, and applying accounting and auditing standards is essential, as is the ability to mentor, develop, and motivate employees.
Problem Solving
Extensive experience in research and data analysis, process improvement, identifying performance gaps, and proposing solutions. Demonstrated ability to make strategic recommendations and develop procedures independently or as part of management.
Communication and Teamwork
Proven ability to communicate complex information effectively across diverse audiences. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for interaction with customers, staff, senior management, and stakeholders. Advanced organizational skills to prioritize and execute complex business and financial tasks.
Customer Service
Demonstrated capability in being proactive with excellent customer service, and extensive experience in resolving issues based on evolving business requirements. Ability to work effectively with internal teams and external service providers.
Technology
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and advanced Excel skills. Aware and adaptable of new technological advancements in this specialized area.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree or certification, such as a CPA license is desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in accounting or related field
CPA or equivalent professional certification
Extensive experience in tax compliance
Experience using Enterprise software in support of business operations
Technical acumen for information technology
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
