Los Alamos National Laboratory Weapons Engineering Mechanical Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in the future of national security? The Weapons Engineering Directorate at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking passionate entry-level/mid-level Mechanical Engineering Technologists to join our team and help shape the future of our nation's security. This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. We are looking for talented individuals to perform a variety of critical duties in this role:

  • Deliver expertise in systems engineering and experimental device design.

  • Oversee fabrication and assembly, surveillance, and production of nuclear stockpile components.

  • Perform engineering analysis and computational simulations.

  • Operate and maintain advanced equipment including electrical, mechanical, pneumatics, vacuum, and pressure systems.

  • Contribute to the weapons response and testing for the evaluation and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile.

Engineering Technologist 1 (ET-1) ($83,900 - $136,600)

Successful applicants will perform the following critical duties in this role.

  • Design and Development: Provide crucial support in the design, manufacture, assembly, and testing of cutting-edge products.

  • Process Optimization: Determine the best processes for product development, including fabrication, material selection, machining methods, equipment selection, tooling, fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Technical Solutions: Engage in computer-related activities such as preparing input data, solving technical problems using computer programs, supporting control systems, and creating drawings with CAD systems.

  • Problem Solving: Resolve mechanical engineering challenges related to hardware design, fixturing, and tooling with practical and effective solutions.

  • Communication Excellence: Showcase your excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in a collaborative work environment.

  • Team Collaboration: Foster a strong collaborative work environment and work closely with a team of dedicated professionals.

Engineering Technologist 2 (ET-2) ($92,300- $151,000)

In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful applicant will also have the following critical duties.

  • Technical Leadership: Lead small project teams, providing guidance and oversight in planning and execution.

  • Process Expertise: Offer insight and direction on manufacturing and assembly processes, including material selection, machining methods, equipment selection, tooling, fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Engineering Solutions: Develop solutions for engineering problems, support hardware design and testing, and conduct calculations and analyses for design engineering.

  • Collaborative Innovation: Work with engineering staff to implement changes in design, manufacturing methods, and drafting techniques; coordinate corrective actions.

  • Team Building: Demonstrate and promote team building, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

  • Effective Communication: Interact with all levels of personnel and customers, effectively organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Design and Manufacturing Experience

  • Expertise in designing mechanical hardware assemblies and applying engineering concepts to mechanical designs

  • Proficient in ASME, AWS, IEEE, and related engineering, design, and manufacturing standards

  • Comprehensive knowledge of fabrication processes, related equipment, hardware, and materials

Communication and Teamwork

  • Proven effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to develop constructive, cooperative working relationships

  • Strong track record of collaborating with teams to meet deliverables

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements at Level 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements at Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in mechanical design, manufacturing, or assembly within the weapons program

  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment, procedures, and operations

  • Demonstrated expertise with +PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software

  • Experience with ASME Y14.41 standards for Digital Product Definition Data Packages and annotated models

  • Familiarity with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants

  • Possession of an active DOE Q clearance

  • Cumulative GPA: A GPA of 3.4 or higher is desired for this competitive position.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
