Shire Environmental Program Manager in Los Angeles, California
The EH&S Environment and Sustainability Program Manager will develop and implement environmental and sustainability programs/initiatives to ensure compliance with governmental and company requirements. This role requires interaction with internal and external stakeholders on critical elements of environmental media, such as air, storm water, waste water, hazardous waste, medical waste, and pollution prevention. This role will interface with subject matter experts from various departments to support the facility’s ongoing compliance and risk reduction efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Executes delivery of environmental and sustainability programs including, but not limited to, air emissions, storm water, waste water, pollution prevention, hazardous waste management, and completion of required environmental reports.
Provides training on compliance requirements to relevant stakeholders
Supports audits and evaluation of current policies, procedures, and documentation to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Leads and/or supports with environmental management system implementation per the ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001 standards.
Supports in the development and implementation of programs to increase employee awareness and knowledge of compliance programs.
Leads and participate in investigations to effectively identify root cause(s) with applicable corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence (CAPA).
Participates in EH&S internal inspections and Gemba walks, including identification of corrective actions and timely resolution of items.
Interacts with other departments in regular meetings to provide EH&S support and to identify needs and gaps.
Influences and collaborates with key stakeholders cross-functionally within Manufacturing, QC lab, Critical Systems, Maintenance, and Engineering organizations to provide support and assure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and company EH&S requirements.
Lead Sustainability Committees, develop charters and provide direction and guidance.

Experience with federal and California regulations and agencies (EPA, DTSC, CUPA, SWCB, CARB, SCAQMD) and associated environmental issues in a complex manufacturing environment.
Strong leadership skills are required to ensure progress and compliance with environmental programs in areas where this role does not directly report. Cross functional teams are required to execute the programs and this role is key to collaboration and guidance.
Experience in data and metric acquisition, management, analysis and presentation to highlight key trends, significant aspects, etc.
Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and implement EH&S Management Systems including safety and health programs.
Demonstrated experience in a research laboratory, biotechnology or pharmaceutical environment is a plus.
Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
Strong technical, written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
Demonstrated ability to maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date records.
Ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations, as well as ability to analyze situations and provide necessary leadership on behalf of the department.
Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including technical staff, site leaders, hourly personnel and be able to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results.

Must have competencies of analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal understanding, initiative, team work, as well as quality orientation/attention to detail.
Education and/or experience
- Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or EH&S discipline preferred with 5+ years related experience or years in the EH&S Manufacturing field. Prefer related experience in a complex, high risk environment. Some leadership experience preferred.
Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 10 pounds routinely and and/or move up to 35 pounds (with assistance) occasionally.
In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions in the facility.
Must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.
No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in the manufacturing environment.
Must be able to work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and filter aid that may require respiratory protection. Facial hair must be removed if required to wear respirator.
Must be able to work in a cold, wet environment
Must be able to work multiple shifts, including weekends.
Must be able to work overtime as required. (only for non-exempt positions)
May be required to work in a confined area.
Some Clean Room and cool/hot storage conditions.
