Shire Lab Scientist, Engineer in Los Angeles, California
This position is responsible for executing process development projects, process improvement projects, contract manufacturing, technology transfer projects. Provide technical expertise to multiple functions within the facility including manufacturing and quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform standard scientific assignments which are typically a significant portion of a larger project.
Select sound techniques to solve problems evaluate changes and make design recommendations
Design appropriate experiments to achieve process improvements with minimal supervision.
Work independently or with other Technical Services personnel to execute experiments.
Conduct assays in support of experiments.
Support regulatory requirements including change submissions and periodic product reviews
Plan and conduct engineering runs, bench scale, pilot scale experiments.
Assessment of new technology and application to our existing processes.
Utilize robust statistical analysis to draw appropriate conclusions from the data.
Develop new or improved techniques and procedures around specific tasks with minimal supervision.
Recommend material and process specifications.
Interface with manufacturing to help drive key metrics.
Lead small project teams as needed to accomplish project objectives.
Knowledge of engineering principals, biochemistry, and protein purification techniques.
Understanding of plasma fractionation is preferred.
Ability to perform experiments in lab and Pilot Plant setting.
Experience with DOE (design of experiments), six sigma, and lean manufacturing a plus.
Knowledge of analytical tools for analysis of proteins.
Demonstrate application of engineering principles on individual/small projects.
Strong assessment and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities.
Excellent computer skills.
Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Education and/or experience
BS or MS degree in bioengineering, biochemistry or related field minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
PhD degree in bioengineering, biochemistry or related field minimum of 1 years of relevant experience.
Project management experience is a plus.
Must be able to push/pull 35 lbs. and lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
Able to work in cold environment
In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and laboratory work.
Must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.
No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in the manufacturing environment.
Will work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and diatomaceous earth that may require respiratory protection.
Will work in a cold, wet environment
Must be able to work multiple shifts, including weekends.
Some Clean Room and cool/hot storage conditions.
