LECTURER, Community Engagement and Social Change Minor (Fall, Winter & Spring Quarters)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The UCLA Community Engagement and Social Change (CESC) Program seeks a lecturer for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters to teach two courses in fall, one course in winter, and one course in spring during the 2024-25 academic year. These courses fulfill requirements for students pursuing the CESC minor. These courses will conform to UCLA’s framework for community-engaged teaching.

The lecturer will be tasked with teaching as follows (any course with the “XP” suffix is a community-engaged course):

  • Fall 2024: a. “Engaging Los Angeles” (CESC 50XP) is a community-engaged lecture course with an enrollment of 120 students that meets General Education requirements and serves as the lower-division gateway course for the minor. The lecturer for this course also manages the three teaching assistants assigned to facilitate the discussion sections for the course. b. “Introduction to Community-Engaged Research” (CESC 190A) is an introduction of principles of community-engaged research designed for students participating in Astin Community Scholars Program. The course explores the intentions behind doing research with community residents and organizations, our responsibilities when conducting research in historically disenfranchised communities, and relationship between socially-just research outcomes and methodologies.

  • Winter 2025: “Perspectives on Civic Engagement for Social Justice” (CESC 100XP) is a community-engaged seminar, with an average enrollment of 20-25 students, that serves as the upper-division gateway course for the minor.

  • Spring 2025: A CESC elective course from the roster of approved upper-division CESC courses: CESC 105XP, CESC M110XP, CESC M115, CESC 133XP, CESC M134XP, CESC 145, CESC 152, CESC 165XP, CESC M170XP, CESC 172XP, CESC M176XP, orCESC 180.

The Community Engagement and Social Change minor is designed to provide students with a theoretical, analytical, and experiential framework for understanding three intersecting dimensions of civic engagement at the local level: 1) issues of social inequality; 2) modes of social change; and 3) the community in which the engagement takes place. The curriculum of the minor is grounded in praxis and specifically provides students multiple opportunities for community-engaged learning and ultimately community-engaged research. The minor is intended to cultivate students’ understanding of, capacity for, and commitment to work toward social change.

Required Qualifications:

● Ph.D. from an accredited university in a field appropriate to teaching courses addressing social inequality issues, community engagement, and social change

● College-level teaching experience utilizing community-engaged teaching pedagogies

● Evidence of high-quality instruction to diverse students

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Record of delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse student body
