POSITION SUMMARY

The Body Fabricator is responsible for the metal fabrication of multiple components of the fire apparatuss body. They must be able to read and follow blueprints/specifications to complete objectives. A Body fabricator welds, sands, cuts, and bolts materials to build the body of the fire apparatus. They will also mount body and pump house onto the subframe of the fire apparatus as well as fill in where needed within the shop.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Fabricates the metal body on the fire apparatus.
  2. Reads and follows blueprints and specifications to complete objectives.
  3. Welds, sands, cuts, and bolts materials to build the body of the fire apparatus.
  4. Mounts body and pump house onto the subframe of the fire apparatus.
  5. Mounts support for equipment to be installed as needed.
  6. Checks the work of the blueprints and specifications to ensure that it will result in a workable product.
  7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required by management to meet the needs of the organization and our members.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED.

Preferred Education:

  • None.

Required Experience:

  • None.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience using MIG and TIG welding equipment.

Position Requirements:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions and do so with a positive attitude.
  • Able to read and work from blueprints/spec book.
  • Ability to identify quality issues and recognize changes within ones production process and make the needed adjustments.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and precisely and have a basic understanding on how to use basic hand tools, shear, and brake press.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and work well in a team environment.
  • You recognize the importance and adherence to all safety policies in order to promote a safe working environment, for everyone at the organization.
  • Understand the need to support the organization to work effectively by adhering to the attendance and punctuality standards and does not burden co-workers and supervisors unfairly with unnecessary and unplanned absences and lateness.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limite standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to learn how to run a computer terminal or PC.
  • No prior experience required (Incumbent will look up and/or enter information into a pre-formatted screen).

Decision Making:

  • Responsibilities are guided by a set of guidelines that provide methods for problem solving.
  • Decisions are made within these guidelines initially, and a supervisor is informed afterwards.
  • Supervisor regularly reviews the activities to determine if the guidelines have been followed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is in a general shop where different tasks are completed and has access to all welfare facilities. In some cases, the temperature can be warmer or colder depending on the season, however the building has AC so it should not vary too often. There is also constant noise with all the machines that are used inside the shop which will cause a difficulty of hearing. Besides noise, some of the machines produce vibrations when being used. Most of the hazards come from machines but following proper procedures should minimize risk. There is also constant dust and airborne particles due to the heavy machinery, as well as welding tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires standing, walking, and the use of hands for the entire shift. It can become very loud in the shop with many machines being used at once. With constant noise, talking or hearing can be difficult. During shifts, some projects require the use of feet, legs, arms, and hands for over 60 minutes at a time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and good depth perception. All positions require the ability to lift 50 pounds.
