UPPCO seeks a personable and professional Manager of Communications & External Affairs to join their team in Marquette, Michigan.

The Manager of Communications & External Affairs endeavors to effectively portray UPPCO's public image and values. This involves developing and implementing strategic communication and public relations programs to educate the public about UPPCO's services. Additionally, this role directs the work of staff members and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

Public Relations

  • Lead the development of company strategies for effective community relations.
  • Build and manage relationships with key figures in the business community and local organizations.
  • Coordinate media announcements across various platforms for maximum public engagement.
  • Oversee content development for media relations to maintain a positive company image.
  • Draft and edit press releases and social media content.
  • Manage company fund donations and select civic events to attend for positive brand representation.
  • Engage with local communities through civic, community, and educational activities.
  • Participate in legislative and regulatory initiatives, advocating for company positions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of internal and external communication programs through feedback mechanisms like surveys and focus groups.

Communications

  • Provide communication support for senior leadership, adapting as needed.
  • Act as the company spokesperson for specific issues, exercising sound judgment.
  • Analyze target audiences to determine effective communication methods.
  • Present information through written, oral, and visual formats for various media.
  • Coordinate communication during emerging issues and crises.
  • Handle outage situations and crisis communication to minimize negative publicity.
  • Draft and edit internal corporate announcements.
  • Manage content on the company's website and social media platforms.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Business, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, etc.).
  • 10 years' professional experience managing communications, public relations, or a related program preferred.
  • Experience in diverse aspects of corporate communications including media relations, and content development for multiple platforms and social media.
  • Clear and compelling verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to earn the understanding and support of individuals/groups with different or opposing points of view.
  • Excellent decision making, interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to anticipate conditions, plan ahead, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed is required.
