JOB SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse-Acute functions as a vital member of the healthcare team by demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism self-development, and teamwork. The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families. The Registered Nurse-Acute is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Diploma or degree in nursing.
Preferred/Optional: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: None
Preferred/Optional: Two years’ hospital nursing experience.
Those inpatient facilities participating in the Clinical Nurse Advancement Portfolio (CNAP) clinical ladder, refer to program documents for eligibility to advance/maintain CNAP level.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required:
Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of employment.
Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).
Preferred/Optional:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION
4 North is a 25-private bed unit within the department of Adult Medical Surgical Services. The unit provides inpatient-nursing care to patients admitted with surgical care needs.
Services Provided/Patient Conditions:
Surgical patient populations admitted to 4 North include:
General Surgery
Surgical Oncology
ENT (including trachs)
Bariatric Surgery
Eye Surgery
Oral Surgery
SDA Wound
Staffing Mix:
4 North provides inpatient-nursing care to patients utilizing a Synergy Model of Care. Patient care is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN’s and CNA’s. Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management. Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift or day to day due to acuity of patients and availability of resources. Additionally, therapy services are provided to patients through Physical, Occupational, Speech and Respiratory Therapy services. Operational support is provided to the department from HUC’s.
Patient Population:
In addition to the Surgical population, 4 North provides care to patients with wounds undergoing hyperbaric treatments and serves as an overflow unit for patients with general medical diagnoses.
Frequent Procedures:
4 North is dedicated to providing nursing care and education to their patients and families. Clinical procedures performed frequently on the unit include:
Antibiotic therapy
Anticoagulation therapy
Electrolyte therapy
Blood product administration
Management of venous access devices, central lines, PICC’s
Management of drains – JP, Duval, g-tubes
Management of epidurals
Management of PCAs
Management of ileostomy and colostomy
Care and management of new and established tracheostomies
Insertion and management of NG tubes - suction
Insertion and care of feeding tubes
Monitoring and management of oxygen therapy modalities
Wound/dressing care - staple/suture removal, wound vacs
Nutrition therapy – TPN, Lipids, tube feeding
