Additional Job Description: Manages orthopedic trauma patients in collaboration with the orthopedic trauma surgeon(s). The position includes direct clinical management through utilization of approved protocols and procedures as well as appropriate medical consultation. Collaborates closely with Orthopedic surgeons and other members of the trauma service to evaluate new trauma patients in the Emergency Room, to provide direction to hospital personnel regarding patient management issues, and to manage inpatient orthopedic fracture patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Completion of a Physician Assistant bachelor's or master's degree program from an accredited college or university. 2. Completion of a Physician Assistant national certification program. 3. Current West Virginia Physician Assistant License required. 4. Exhibits evidence of comprehensive assessment skills, expert clinical skills, and problem-solving abilities, and commit to a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care. 5. Must hold a valid controlled substance registration with both the WV Board of Pharmacy and the DEA and must have past surgical and/or critical care experience of at least 1 year in a hospital-based setting. The controlled substance registration must be current when submitting for a DEA license.

EXPERIENCE: 1. One or more years Physician Assistant experience required. Experience must include past surgical and/or critical care experience of at least 1 year in a hospital-based setting.

Performs physical examinations, compiles medical data, and records medical history and implements a treatment plan for new and established patients 2. Performs Emergency Department and inpatient consultations. 3. Coordinates logistics with OR Rounds on inpatient trauma patients. 4. Orders appropriate diagnostic studies when indicated. 5. Instructs patients and families regarding treatment plans and medications. 6. Consults with physician when warranted to assess patient condition and treatment. 7. Ensures that medical charts and administrative paperwork are completed in a timely manner 8. Provides monitoring and continuity of care upon discharge. 9. Provides follow-up care to patients according to practice guidelines 10. Supports the patient and family by explaining the procedure experience with specific instructions to the patient and family regarding their responsibilities in the outpatient process. 11. Performs within guidelines of specific privileges approved by the governing body and delegated by the collaborating physician.
