Description
We are seeking a Chemical Process/Production Engineer to support technical and manufacturing aspects of operations undertaken in Production.The Engineer will monitor daily Production batch processes, troubleshoot and optimize processes, reports/corrects non-conformances during the Run, and communicates with Production, Pilot Plant Operators, management, scientists, and analytical team regarding technical issues and problem resolution.The Engineer will also perform data analytics of production runs, and apply strategies to continuously improve processes, increase product yields, and reduce cost, cycle times.
Job Responsibilities
Leads in the promotion of a strong safety and environmental stewardship culture, ensures good engineering practices and standards are followed, contributes technical expertise to events that impact the safety, health, and environmental performance of the site
Serves as technical lead for a specific area of the process, provide technical assistance, calculations, and troubleshooting for the daily operational, maintenance, and product quality needs, provides guidance to Chemical Operators accordingly
Identifies and monitors important process metrics such as, yield, cycle time, productivity, and throughput; analyzes product non-conformance issues
Identifies and leads Continuous Improvement Projects with emphasis on manufacturing cost reduction, capacity improvements/cycle time reductions, energy and waste reduction, and process reliability
Generates post production review of processes to understand the causes of variances
Communicates the process review data to stakeholders, organizes the suggested changes to batch operations procedures for process improvement, and seeks approval for timely revision of documents in accordance to company policy
Works with Operations, Engineering, and EHS during preparation of procedures running the batch processes, reviewing the results, and suggesting process changes as necessary
Edits and scales batch procedures as directed by Operations, R&D, Engineering, or Scheduling
Assists in scale up from Pilot Plant to larger scale production and troubleshoots technical aspects during all phases of the transition to production scale
Briefs Chemical Operators on new processes and debriefs Operators to understand any issues on completion of the process
Proposes engineering projects for Safety, Environmental, Quality, or Capacity Utilization improvements; supports design engineering to execute and implement the improvement projects in production
Assists in developing short-and long-term capital project planning
Partners with EHS personnel and other engineers in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) of new and existing processes, as part of PSM and RMP programs, and Safety Incident Investigations
Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and generates Management of Change (MOC) document for process/equipment changes in accordance with PSM requirements
Assists operations leadership in training of personnel
Qualifications
Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering with at least 5 years’ experience in batch and/or continuous operations in specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical, or related field is preferred.
Experience
Experience with highly-hazardous chemicals and processes
Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) programs and work streams
Ability to understand Process Flow Diagrams and P&IDs is required
Experience with Process Safety Information, Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, and continuous improvement through incident investigations and root cause determination
Preference will be given to those who have an advanced degree and good understanding of the fundamentals of chemical engineering including: material and energy balance, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, thermodynamics, and mixing phenomena
Knowledge and experience of chemical manufacturing unit operations, including batch reactors, distillation columns, solvent recovery, pumps, filtration, crystallization, PLC Programming, etc.
Good understanding of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry is desirable
Six sigma and statistical analysis experience preferred
Working knowledge of process automation is desirable
Experience in statistical software, such as JMP, or Minitab is preferred
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to Colorado weather conditions and manufacturing plant environment. Will be in manufacturing and lab environments that require the appropriate use of PPE.
Employee may be required to work hours other than their usual schedule; may be required to be on-call or available after hours and weekends to support 24/7 manufacturing processes.
