Responsibilities

MSTS is seeking a Senior Technologist for the Power Operations Department. The Power Operations department provides reliable high-power electrical distribution to facilities, projects and locations at the NNSS. The Senior Technologist will report to the Power Operations Department Manager within the Fleet & Critical Site Infrastructure Division

Key Responsibilities

  • Working knowledge of a variety of electrical systems with a focus on protective relays.

  • Knowledge with RF, SCADA communication systems, AC/DC instrumentation a plus.

  • Maintain and manage collaborative relationships with inner department’s i.e. Design Engineering, IT/Cyber and Construction.

  • Aid bargaining staff in completion of work packages, address data collection concerns, and utilization of software in the field.

  • Identify innovative processes for improving repair process flow, data collection, and analysis.

  • Assist with optimization of work sequences and tasks covered by operating procedures.

  • Collaborate across teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

  • Identify and suggest solutions to routine or recurring problems.

  • File and retrieve maps, records, reads and interprets engineering drawings.

  • Participate in the development of new approaches to maintenance, operations, or testing.

  • Plan, guide, or prepare administrative and technical documents as required for maintenance, operations, or testing.

  • Assist with coordination of project assignments among engineering, construction, specialty staff groups, clients, and vendors.

  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 5 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 7 years’ progressive related experience.

  • Experience with protective relays for electrical systems at greater than 12.47kV is highly desired.

  • Experience working for an electrical utility is highly desired.

  • Perform testing and maintenance of various electrical power apparatus including Circuit Breakers, Transformers, Instrument Transformers, Grounding Systems, SF6 Interrupters, Meters, Relays, Motor Control Centers, SCADA Systems etc.

  • Inspect, test, adjust, calibrate, repair and install transmission and distribution power system protection and control equipment (SEL relays).

  • A working technical knowledge of SCADA electrical theory, and related electrical relay programing, testing and maintenance. Point to point communication of distribution equipment is preferred.

  • Reading electrical drawings including block diagrams, three lines, single lines, DC/AC schematics & logic diagrams.

  • Experience working directly with both various industrial tradesmen and interdisciplinary teams of engineers is desirable.

  • Proficient computer competencies; notably using Microsoft suites.

  • Perform tests on electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays, capturing test data electronically and uploading results to central database.

  • Demonstrate safe work practices and avoids unsafe behaviors.

  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Work schedule for this position is Monday – Thursday (subject to change).

  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age.     Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 (http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=14b1c770db022992d237769fbe9fc519&mc=true&node=se10.4.707_14&rgn=div8) , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Hourly range for this position is: $32.93 - $49.40.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
