CiTi BOCES Practical Nursing Coordinator – Adult Education in Mexico, New York

The Practical Nursing Coordinator will be responsible for the overall day-to-day management and student instruction for the Practical Nursing Program. This position is comprised of .5 FTE instruction and .5 FTE administrative duties. Will also provide expertise needed for the clinical and theory components.

Duties and Responsibilities Include :

  • Ensure the program adheres to the curriculum approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

  • Ensure that any and all changes to the curriculum are made with approval of the CTE Coordinator for Adult Education and under the direction and/or approval of the NYSED.

  • Implements program curriculum, philosophy, goals and objectives.

  • Creates, assigns, and grades day to day class, lab or clinical study materials.

  • Ensures current grading for all students.

  • Assist with maintaining and reporting all attendance in a timely manner utilizing current department reporting system.

  • Maintains an ongoing search of professional literature for materials to update knowledge of health care delivery and education.

  • Uses behavioral objectives in planning class, clinical and lab content.

  • Prepares class materials for assigned day, including web sources, AV materials and guest speakers as needed.

  • Prepares and updates course syllabi.

  • Assists/participates in the orientation of all incoming students.

  • Assists/participates in graduation of all outgoing students.

  • Functions as a lead instructor for all assigned class and lab activities.

  • Prepares alternative quizzes as necessary.

  • Administers all testing as defined in the curriculum.

  • Provides tutoring to students as necessary.

  • Counsel students in areas of academic weakness.

  • Follows school policies and interprets these policies for students, referring student to CTE Coordinator for Adult Education as needed.

  • Assists with faculty and student interviews as may be requested by the CTE Coordinator for Adult Education.

  • Attends department faculty, advisory or other meetings as may be assigned by the CTE Coordinator for Adult Education.

  • Maintains patient rights, HIPAA laws and facility policies and maintains patient’s safety at clinical.

  • Follows the dress code as outlined; For clinical; hair appropriately fastened off collar, clean and wrinkle free nursing uniform or scrubs, white shoes, and ID badge; lab coat is optional. For classroom; business dress, clean and wrinkle free.

  • Maintains a professional appearance and dress during class, lab and clinical.

  • Demonstrates good communication skills.

  • Discusses and assists with the objectives of facility policies.

  • Prepares student patient assignments within the scope of PN practice, facility policy and proficiency of the student, prior to the start of clinical.

  • Conducts pre/post conferences so that students can actively participate.

  • Corrects, returns, and documents process guides, observation questions and

  • clinical documents weekly.

  • Directly supervises, assists, assesses and/or verbally guides student with

  • procedure/skills until the student is able to safely perform with minimum

  • supervision: also ensure that patient care is performed and documented

  • accurately in a timely manner.

  • Assists students in the interpretation and distribution of prescribed safe

  • therapeutic regimen for their assigned patient demonstrating the six medication rights.

  • Acts as a representative of the school to community agencies and health facilities in such a way as to promote a positive image of the nursing profession and CiTi Oswego County BOCES.

  • Demonstrates respect for the student, other instructors and facility staff

  • Guides student to develop progressive, appropriate independence

  • Reviews material/equipment needs and recommends purchases

  • Assists in the preparation of documentation for the state PN review and other required reports.

  • Assist CTE Coordinator for Adult Education to create and maintain a program calendar that tallies and tracks classroom, lab and clinical hours to ensure compliance with stated program hours as requested.

  • Be aware of and counsel students with poor attendance and/or poor academic standing.

  • Request textbooks, uniforms, and lab materials in a timely manner.

  • Assist with the nursing budget process as requested.

  • Assist nursing faculty in classroom, lab, and clinical settings as needed.

  • Assist with the hiring, onboarding and review of Practical Nursing faculty.

  • Assist Practical Nursing faculty with professional development

  • Visit health care facilities in an effort to build and maintain relationships.

  • Attend recruiting events and activities to build potential student interest in the program

Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing or Nursing Education or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and actively enrolled or enrolling in a Master's program.

  • Valid NYS professional nursing license.

  • 5 years’ experience acute care or long-term care preferred.

  • Previous teaching and/or supervisory experience preferred.
