This is a non-tenure track position and includes full benefits. This MPS track gives students experience in molecular techniques, phylogenetics, taxonomy, and museum/collection science. The goals of this program are to train a new generation of evolutionary biologists in contemporary techniques such as genomics as well as classical techniques such as taxonomy and physical collection maintenance. Taking advantage of the diverse biota at the Voss Marine Invertebrate Collection (VMIC), the successful candidate will have the opportunity to oversee the education-related activities, preservation, and digitization of the VMIC.
The successful candidate will serve a significant mentorship role for graduate students by serving on or chairing MPS committees and assisting with internship and post-graduation job placement. The candidate is expected to teach existing graduate courses as well as develop and teach new graduate courses in evolutionary marine phylogenetics, systematics, and genomics; museum collection and data management; and advanced invertebrate zoology. The candidate will be expected to keep the track relevant to industry needs, provide students with relevant professional training, and serve as academic coordinator for the Marine Invertebrate Biology and Evolution Track in the MPS program.
A Ph.D. in evolution, (invertebrate) developmental biology, marine ecology, marine biology, conservation, zoology, biology or closely-related field and previous research and graduate-level teaching experience in evolution and taxonomy required.
The successful candidate's preferred skills are to have well-established professional connections with local, regional, and national academic institutions, NGOs, museums, and government entities. Applicants must have experience teaching at the University level, providing public presentations, and communicating their work to the public through various media. Applicants should have experience relevant to the curation, preservation, and digitization of the wet and dry museum collection. Knowledge of key concepts in the field of invertebrate biology and evolution are preferred. Additional job functions include teaching at the University level, securing internships for students, mentoring graduate students, curating the VMIC by overseeing the preservation, digitization, and date management of the collection.
