Sr. Medical Physicist

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of OHSC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Sr. Medical Physicist to work in Miami, FL. The Sr. Medical Physicist (H) is responsible for the proper use of device-produced radiation and radioactive materials applied to humans in all University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Health Care Systems facilities and supervises the work and task assignments for Diagnostic Medical Physicists, Medical Physicist Assistants, and Technicians. The incumbent dedicates about 20% of his/her time to matters related to the use of radioactive materials on patients, 15% of his/her time serving as MRI Safety Expert, 55% of his/her time to the use of x-rays in Diagnostic Radiology/Nuclear Medicine, and 10% of his/her time to training of personnel. Furthermore, the incumbent serves as Assistant Radiation Safety Officer.

  • Establishes radiation safety programs for the use of radioactive materials. Performs internal audits, testing of equipment, and contamination surveys for adherence with radiation safety programs and compliance with government regulations. Monitors radiation exposure to patients, staff, and the general public and maintains records for government agencies. Prepares necessary documentation for licensing of radioactive materials and for registration and certification of radiation equipment. Serves as primary contact during and assists with equipment, accrediting body, and government inspections. Serves as a member of the hospital’s Radiation Safety Committee. Serves as Radiation Safety Officer on any of the following State of Florida License Numbers: 1319-1, 1319-3, 76-13, 3908-1, 3908-2, and 3908-4.

  • Establishes protocols for scanning of implanted devices based on MR safe, MR conditional. Contributes to clinical services by serving as MRI Safety Expert, optimizing MRI-based clinical and research imaging protocols. Assists in design and execution of MRI data collection and analysis and develops an ongoing process for quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and ACR accreditation. Conducts equipment acceptance testing and evaluates new technologies and upgrades. Provides MR physics education for Resident and Fellow training programs. Carries out MRI research, including clinical trials, and collaborates with others conducting such research.

  • Establishes radiation safety programs for x-rays, linear accelerators, and other therapy devices. Establishes quality control, modality accreditation, and radiation safety programs for diagnostic x-rays, fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography, Mammography (2D, 3D, and Tomo), Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Ultrasound. Performs lead shielding calculations for diagnostic facilities and radiation surveys.

  • Provides radiation safety sessions to Residents and Physicians working with radioactive materials or x-rays; provides radiation safety training to Nurses working with radiation or caring for patients with radioactive materials.

  • Serves as Acting Director of the Radiation Control Center and Radiation Safety Officer for non-human use in the Director’s absence.

  • Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessments, and implements and monitors controls.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD degree in relevant field

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

  • Valid State of Florida license

  • American Board of Radiology certification in Diagnostic Medical Physics

  • American Board of Radiology certification in Radiological Physics

  • American Board of Radiology certification in Medical Physics

  • American Board of Science certification in Nuclear Medicine – Nuclear Medicine Physics & Instrumentation

  • American Board of Medical Physics certification in Magnetic Imaging Resonance Physics

  • Qualifies to be Radiation Safety Office for Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License with GammaKnife™ and High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (HDR)

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, including image analysis.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
