The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for Supervisor, Ophthalmic Services in the Department of Research.
The Supervisor, Ophthalmic Services (H) manages related support services such as on-site visual fields, photography, and echography in collaboration with technical expertise-based support department managers. The incumbent provides supervision of technical and coordinator staff based upon specific areas assigned.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides day to day direction to the ophthalmic technicians, patient coordinators, and professional staff in support areas, as assigned.
Adjusts daily schedules based on patient schedules, available staffing, and patient flow in the clinic areas.
Responds to clinical demands and patient demands throughout the day to provide efficient staff utilization and to maintain patient flow and consistency.
Performs duties as a functioning ophthalmic technician or support personnel (testing or coordinating based on clinical background and experience).
Will be trained if required to function at capacity in their role.
Maintains a working understanding of the functions performed by the ophthalmic specialists, pod coordinators, and support personnel.
Maintains a strong understanding of the clinical information systems that support the technical functions.
Schedules weekly time working in the clinical departments to observe patient flow and maintain clinical skill set.
Coordinates schedules, works with physicians and providers to determine staffing needs and special circumstances requiring adjustments.
Assumes further training needs, if required, to gain proficiency in areas of clinical need.
Mentors assigned staff to provide stability and development path opportunities within the organization.
Provides training opportunities and identifies training needs of the staff assigned and assures continued training to maintain competency.
Ensures daily operation of clinical areas meets the needs of the patients and physicians, and is provided according to the accepted standards of care.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:High school diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:Certification in relevant specialty or field - Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate (COA)
Experience:Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
Knowledge of business and management principles.
Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

Department Addendum
Oversee clinical research staff for the Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD) Center Collaborate with clinical operations to ensure training and scheduling of clinical operations staff to support clinical research services
Oversee maintenance of clinical research equipment including freezers, refrigerators, centrifuges, 4 Meter Rooms, etc. of all buildings.
Provide onboarding training to new clinical research staff and refresher training as needed Work with other clinical research personnel to adequately run the IRD research protocols Ensure COMPLION (electronic regulatory binder system) is up to date for each study at the satellite offices.
Meet with principal investigators to ensure PI oversight of Day to day problem resolution of clinical research issues such as staffing shortages, rescheduling staff and patients in accordance to protocol windows.
Meet with the IRD Center to ensure study patients are scheduled accordingly to avoid clinic delays.
Determine clinical research personnel effort for each study to determine feasible workload depending upon potential target enrollment and other research projects.
Ensure that sponsors are invoiced on a monthly basis based upon work completed by the site Submit justification to the BPEI Faculty Feasibility Review Committee (FFC) for study approval Submit to the Miller School of Medicine, (MSOM) feasibility for University approval.
Review study financial records to determine trends such as non-payment or payments in excess.
Reviewing and providing feedback to the Office of Research Administration (ORA) on budgets and contracts for satellite agreements Liaison between the Clinical Research Services Unit and clinical operations Lead in any audits in the satellite offices, which may include the issuance of Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) Plans, submit Reportable New Information (RNIs) to the IRB Review and monitor all satellite projects to ensure compliance with University and department specific SOPs and policies.
