Position Summary:

MSU Extension Fruit Team seeks an assistant to help with programming and research projects supporting the commercial tree fruit industry. The position will be based in Hart and will cover the West Central Michigan region. Projects mainly fall under the disciplines of horticulture, entomology, and plant pathology. 20-25 hours/week.

Characteristic Duties/Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities will include assisting with development and execution of projects related to commercial tree fruit production. Specific tasks will include lab, field, and office work, such as flagging trees, collecting orchard data, checking insect trap lines and apple phenology, identifying insects microscopically, processing fruit, entering data, generating reports, reviewing research literature, and interacting with growers.

Position Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call.

Desired Qualifications

College science background preferred.

Suitable applicants must understand basic scientific research (experimental design, basic analysis, and reporting).

Experience working in tree fruit systems.

Experience operating a tractor.

Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.
