City Of Minneapolis-Human Resources Traffic Utility Locator (Engineering Technician I) in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Position Description Restricted to current City of Minneapolis employees in the Public Works Department Only Traffic and Parking Services is hiring an Engineering Technician II position, please see the descriptions below for details. This position currently reports to 300 Border Ave N, Minneapolis MN to provide support for Traffic's maintenance, operation, and planning needs. The position with work with the underground utility locating group. Job Duties and Responsibilities * Make difficult tabulations and computations in connection with engineering project work and costs, including arithmetic, and trigonometry. * Investigate complaints regarding City owned structures or property and make recommendations to higher level staff regarding a course of action. * Perform computer aided or manual civil engineering drafting and design work. * Prepare detailed plans, estimates, and draft specifications, plats, etc. from sketches, drawings, field notes, etc., using computer-based design packages. * Update and maintain records for engineering division assigned to, both manual and computer based. * Perform field investigation work including taking traffic counts, researching City facilities, inspecting work of contractors, etc. * Participate in locating underground utilities. * Assist in the preparation of reports and related technical correspondence. * Train and give work direction to Engineering Technicians I. Traffic Parking and Services - Utility Locator This position is part of a team that is responsible for locating Traffic and Parking Services' (T&PS) underground electrical facilities, including Signals, Street Lighting, and Communication lines. Primary responsibility is to oversee and process Gopher State One Call (GSOC) tickets for T&PS in a dedicated area and to help cover other areas of the city when your teammates need assistance. You will also be responsible for damage investigations and reports for our assets in the field. Be a point of communication for our team with other internal groups and for external contractors on projects that impact our infrastructure. Take field notes if Traffic's as-builts involving our infrastructure are not accurate. After recording the field notes, you will be responsible for updating our as-builts by drafting in CADD (MicroStation V8i), updating our asset management database (Cartegraph), and utilizing other software to help create the most accurate records as possible. Other duties include but are not limited to office work with standard Microsoft programs. Working Location: This position works on-site only. Working Conditions: This position is mostly in the field 12 months of the year, with potential computer work in the office during the off-season. Primary work hours are Monday- Friday, 7:00am to 3:30p.m Required Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Eighteen months training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent Minimum Experience: Two years of experience performing similar duties Equivalency: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered. Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and continue to maintain a valid Driver's License Selection Process: The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Drug and Alcohol Testing: All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Good knowledge of civil engineering drafting and design, and related computer software packages. * Ability to perform civil engineering survey work. * Good verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to perform mathematical calculations. * Some positions require the ability to perform modern civil engineering survey work. * Ability to work independently and prioritize work. * Ability to communicate with diverse populations in challenging situations.
