CITY OF MOAB Grounds Maintenance in MOAB, Utah

General Purpose

The Facilities Grounds Maintenance Worker performs general grounds maintenance for City-owned facilities landscapes and grounds.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: The Facilities Grounds Maintenance Worker works under the general supervision of the Facilities Lead and the Public Works Director.

Supervision Exercised: N/A

Essential Functions
  • Irrigates the lawns and keeps the irrigation facilities in operating condition; including the adjustment of valves, sprinklers and timers 
  • Repairs landscape irrigation systems and programs irrigation controllers 
  • Performs a variety of routine grounds maintenance work; rakes, plants, transplants, sprays, trims shrubs and low trees; re-lays sod 
  • Removes various debris including weeds from the facility grounds making the landscape areas and sidewalks safe and clean. Sweeps around picnic tables; paints various facilities as instructed, 
  • Weeds around trees and other places; sprays for noxious weeds and insects if needed; 
  • Operates construction and maintenance machinery and equipment such as skid steers, excavators, and trenchers 
  • Cleans parking, curbs, and gutters, keeps free of trash, debris, and weeds 
  • Maintains parking lots, sidewalks, gutters, landscaping and outdoor areas adjacent to buildings. Removes ice, snow, debris, trash, and weeds from sidewalks and parking lots. 
  • Assists with preparation for special events and programs around City facilities; assists with maintenance and cleaning required for special events. 
  • Assists with the installation of equipment and other needed items. 
  • May assist with other Department functions as assigned. 
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment; portrays a positive public image and works with the public and other employees in a courteous and professional manner. 
  • Assists in the implementation of monthly pest control operations for City owned Facilities and grounds. Sprays insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers according to the label. Performs rodent control, and keeps records of all applications. 
  • Recognize sensitive and/or confidential information and keep such information confidential when exposed to, during the process of completing daily tasks. 
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • High school graduate or equivalent, and 
  • Four (4) years of landscape maintenance
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Some knowledge of routine minor repair and maintenance functions. 
  • Some knowledge of plumbing, and landscape irrigation. 
  • Some knowledge of landscape maintenance. 
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. 
  • Ability to perform light and heavy labor, such as mowing, trimming trees, shoveling, removing or installing landscaping materials, and shoveling snow.
  • Ability to use small hand tools. 
  • Ability to make minor repairs. 
  • Some knowledge of pest control and herbicide applications.
Special Qualifications
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends. 
  • Upon employment must possess a valid Utah Pesticide Applicators License. 
  • Upon employment must possess a valid Utah Driver's License. 
  • Must pass an NCIC background check. 

Within one year, must:

  • Receive First Aid,
  • CPR, 
  • AED, 
  • Flagger Certification 
  • Pesticide and herbicide certifications
Work Environment and Physical Demands

This position frequently works outdoors in variable conditions. The Gro unds Maintenance Worker performs light through heavy labor tasks. Tasks regularly include muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing are necessary for performing most essential functions. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.

Selection Guidelines

A formal resume is requ red; finalists will interview with the appropriate hiring authority as designated by the city council. Applicant must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check, and upon employment, must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
