Colorado Department Of Transportation Heavy Equipment Mechanic III (Field Mechanic) - Montrose in Montrose, Colorado

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Position This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems. Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to, 10 -ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, Snow blowers and mower tractors with mower decks tow behind and side arm.

CDOT pays for and provides tools for mechanics.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Diagnoses equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment including scan tools and diagnostic computers Visually inspects equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids. Test drives vehicles and tests operation of equipment and components. Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts such as mounting brackets, special tooling and other small fabrication projects. Designs, fabricates parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations by machining, arc welding and oxygen-acteylene cutting and welding; plasma cutter; MIG and TIG. Sets up and installs new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT specifications for special needs and uses of the Department. Performs record keeping and documentation on all assigned units; tracks equipment maintenance, repairs and keeps Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment. Orders and procures sparts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional. Prepares work orders in SAP Prepares materials estimates. Works with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public. Maintains technical knowledge of safety procedures and guidance materials, including Safety Manual and Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Equipment manufactur s safety guides, OSHA publications. Abides by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Attends safety training and participate in tailgate safety talks. Continuously learns and develops job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses both on line and in person. Participates in regional trainings, work unit meetings, informal exchanges, committees, and task forces Attends new equipment commissioning trainings held by equipment vendors. Maintains technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials and adapt to any changes, updates, and any technology improvements or changes. Other duties as assigned.
