Salary Grade NC05Salary Range $31,688 - $55,453*

Positions 60020507 & 60020536 will be filled from this posting. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions. Positions are located in the Moore County Div. 8 Traffic Services Unit but will be subject to work in all eight counties within the Division. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks associated with maintenance, construction and repair of the highway system by operating equipment and performing semi-skilled tasks such as installation of traffic control devices and detours; pre-lining pavement markings; applying pavement markings; applying heat in place thermoplastic; installing, maintaining and inspection of signs; assisting and installing signal related equipment and hardware; inspecting contract work; and monitoring manual tasks performed. Position will respond to emergencies including signs, signals, and other incidents as they occur. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures

  • Experience with Changeable Message Signs (CMS) programming, deploying and activating

  • Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety

  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)

Additional Expectations:

Operate and maintain a variety of small hand and power tools and have a working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Employee will be expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Employee must have ability to lift and carry 50 lbs., climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays and is subject to emergency call back and night work during adverse weather and special events. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
