Description The Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a Lab Technician. About the Opportunity The primary purpose of this position is to manage and oversee all the facilities and personnel of the department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) that provide in an expeditious and safe manner engineering support to the research and educational activities undertaken by its faculty, students and staff at any given time. This position participates in the advanced planning, design, construction, and operation of teaching and research laboratories, while leading the technical staff that maintains these laboratories in good operation condition and runs the mechanical and electronic shops of the department. This position responds to inquiries and requests for technical assistance from MMAE faculty, students and staff, as well as from external organizations, which frequently require innovative solutions to engineering or logistical problems of moderate to high complexity. Therefore, it entails solid, rational judgment, resourcefulness and originality, in addition to sound knowledge of practical, hands-on engineering techniques, as well as some familiarity with legal, social, and financial aspects of project management and equipment maintenance. This is accomplished through periodic meetings with the Chairperson of the department and some of its key faculty members. Participate in the development of short term and long-term plans for staffing, operating budgets, equipment purchases, as well as requirements for laboratory and shop space, as a voting member of the Laboratory Committee of the MMAE department. Establish operating policies and procedures for the technical staff that maintains the laboratory and shop facilities of the department, including internal management and communications systems and practices. Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for the MMAE department. In this capacity, the position is responsible for developing and updating the Chemical Hygiene Plan for all activities of the department, as well as for enforcing all environmental, health and safety laws, policies and regulations, by conducting inspections of all departmental facilities to ensure compliance.
