rrPosition Summary:
rProvides functional supervision of day-to-day activities of a laboratory or field research enterprise, including directing the activities of graduate and undergraduate students, staff researchers and research support staff. Develops guidelines and protocols for lab operations. Assures quality control; maintains budget; and operates, tests, and repairs electronic and/or scientific test equipment used. Assists with the construction and modification of new and prototype scientific devices.
Duties may include:
- Provide consulting services to department management, public and private sector entities
- Provide final review of policies and procedures; recommending changes based on prevailing scientific evidence
- Supervise scientific/technical staff
- Direct and/or planning and implementing a component of the scientific program
- Direct and/or planning and monitoring research projects in conjunction with other agencies
- Direct and/or preparing reports assessing use, distribution, fate, exposure, and probability of adverse effects of chemicals and/or radiological constituents or other hazardous substances in specific use situations
- Direct and/or developing and /or providing final detailed review of risk assessments and making recommendations for improvement where risk level is unacceptable
- Establish work priorities and performance standards; may be involved in hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning and reviewing work
- Make managerial decisions that directly affect the efficiency, cost, reputation and service quality of the laboratory
- Develop budgets, distribute budgeted funds and exercise the primary control over a budget

rrMinimum Qualifications:
r
- Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering, Technology or Science
{=html} <!-- --> - Two years of post-Bachelor\'s research work to include technical/administrative experience in research operations
rrPreferred Qualifications:
r
- MS in Engineering, technology, or science
- Ability to use available shop tools to maintain and repair lab related malfunctions
- Capability to explain principles of and train students in use and operation of laboratory equipment including gas chromatography, optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR), valves, pumps, control systems, and other hardware
- Instructional experience in a laboratory setting
- Experience interfacing analog and digital instrumentation or components
- Experience using Lab Windows CVI
- Experience with design, develop and implement instructional laboratory experiments and related curriculum
- Willingness to take Chemical Engineering and related classes for continuous improvement as suggested by the supervisor
- Ability to listen to, work with, and instruct undergraduate and students with their academic and/or research projects
- Great organizational and multitasking skills for planning, allocating/ordering materials
- Ability to manage time in order to make the laboratories run smoothly
- Good knowledge and experience in lab safety, computer programing , computer hardware interfacing experience, problem solving and troubleshooting, and general laboratory skills
- Effective written and oral communication and good interpersonal skills
- The abil ty to:
- Identify problems and related technical issues leading to long term, generic solutions
- Identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting department, researcher, or course needs
- Manage department experimental research and instructional laboratories and equipment
- Work with minimal supervision
