Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Camp Overlook Assistant Camp Director - Mountain View, NY in Mountain View, New York

This position will serve as Assistant Camp Director for 4-H Camp Overlook, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Franklin and St. Lawrence County, located in Mountain View, New York. The primary responsibility of this position is to further the mission of camp by assisting the Camp Director with administration, management and supervision of staff and campers. Duties include, but are not limited to: assisting the Camp Director with design, delivery and evaluation of a summer camp program that meets the needs and interests of campers and parents, assisting in the implementation of afternoon and evening programs; assisting in daily operations, assisting with supervision of 4-H campers and counseling staff, and assisting with weekly camp paperwork – online registration and scheduling, camp store, day camper sign in, and reviewing and maintaining paperwork/logs as required. This position accepts and performs all position duties outlined in this position description, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Overlook Director. NOTE: This position does not include regular cabin responsibilities, but it is possible it could include occasional cabin responsibilities.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time exempt position, Sunday through Friday. The rate for this position is $500 to $600 per week commensurate on experience.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. If no Bachelor's degree, employee must be at least 25 years old with relevant experience to comply with NYS DOH regulations.

  • Supervising or leadership experience.

  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

  • Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4-H Camp Overlook, Mountain View, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of previous camp work experience, or equivalent. Administrative/leadership experience at an overnight summer camp or similar environment is highly preferred.

  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train if necessary).

  • Understanding of the developmental needs of youth of all ages.

  • Demonstrated ability and desire to work with children and young adults indoors and outdoors.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to one’s peer group.

  • Demonstrated ability to accept guidance and supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages.

  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, and resiliency skills during adverse situations.

  • Experience working with youth of all ages.

    Position Responsibilities:

    Job Duties - 95%

  1. Assist the Camp Director in overseeing all aspects of managing, coordinating, and operating an overnight summer youth camp.
  • Assist the Camp Director in maintaining a safe camping environment and abiding by all Department of Health (DOH) regulations and the Camp Safety Manual.

  • Assist the Camp Director in providing guidance, direction, and support to staff, relating to camper needs, conflict mediation (campers and staff) and special concerns.

  • Assist in providing supervision of campers during all meals, recreation time, free time, free swim, evening programs and other camp activities.

  • Assist in the development of staff training programs, including pre-camp training of counseling staff.

  • Assist the Camp Director in maintaining the American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation.

  • Maintain a strong knowledge of camp manuals, policies, procedures and NYS requirements.

  • Assist with weekly camp paperwork – camp registration paperwork, permission forms, weekly evaluations, program surveys, etc.

  • Develop and oversee staff class schedules, ensuring all staff are given adequate daily breaks and staff to camper ratios are always maintained.

  • Run the camp store daily.

  1. Provide a high level of support to campers and staff.
  • Work with leadership team to ensure the emotional and physical wellbeing of campers and staff.

  • Assist counselors and other staff when addressing camper behavioral concerns.

  • Maintain required documentation of events and information and communicate concerns to the Camp Director.

  • Check in regularly with all staff to ensure their needs are met, and communicate those needs to the Camp Director.

  1. Develop, deliver, and evaluate the 4-H Leadership program at camp.
  • Using research-based 4-H curriculum and existing program resources, write age-appropriate lesson plans for the Leader-in-Training (LIT) and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) programs at 4-H Camp Overlook.

  • Give LIT’s and CIT’s leadership opportunities while at camp, making sure to follow all DOH and ACA guidelines and regulations when doing so.

  • Evaluate the progress of 4-H campers involved in the leadership training programs and recommend 4-H campers for continued participation in leadership training programs and/or future staff positions.

  1. Assist in the development, delivery, and evaluation of all programs at 4-H Camp Overlook, ensuring that all programs meet the needs and interests of campers and parents.
  • Ensure programs are delivered in a safe and quality manner, using 4-H research-based curriculum as appropriate.

  • Cooperate with coordinators, directors and counselors in the development and implementation of all camp activities.

  • Ensure that all campers are provided the opportunity to participate in all camp activities.

  1. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Represent 4-H Camp Overlook in initial contact with parents and campers on opening day of each session, making every effort to make campers and parents feel comfortable and welcome.

  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.

  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship.

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

  1. Assist in the overall evaluation of the summer camp.
  • Provide recommendations and concerns to camp director and/or camp assistant director regarding program area coordinators and counselor work performances.

  • Seek and analyze input from youth, families, and staff regarding the quality, safety and enjoyment of the program and staff. Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of all 4-H youth programming offered at 4-H Camp Overlook throughout the summer.

  • Provide feedback to the Camp Director in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in programs offered at 4-H Camp Overlook in the future.

  1. Assist in the supervision of camp staff as directed.

  2. Keep in direct communication with the Camp Director to communicate pertinent information regarding camper and staff activities as appropriate.

  3. Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director.

    Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • Attend 4-H Camp Overlook orientation/training program, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled.

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

    Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
