Position Information

Job Title Student Assistant - Teacher (Music Preparatory Division)

General Description

This is a student position responsible for teaching private and/or group lessons to children and adults enrolled in the Music Preparatory Division, providing support for all Music Prep areas, recruiting for and maintaining studio, and participating in Music Prep activities such as teacher meetings, fundraisers, registration, and recruiting assignments. Responsible for evaluating progress of students, preparing students for recitals, and encouraging students to participate in festivals, theory tests, and performance opportunities. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Job Duties

  1. Prepares lesson plans for each teaching session.

  2. Recruits new students.

  3. Conducts individual assessments of student progress.

  4. Communicates effectively with parents, students, and colleagues.

  5. Prepares students for recitals at the end of the fall and spring semesters.

  6. Encourages students in their music studies.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Ability to teach the instrument being taught.

  3. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  4. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, university faculty and staff, and the general public.

  5. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students taking lessons.

  6. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.

    Required Qualifications

The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

Referral from a music professor is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of at least one pedagogy course is preferred.

Physical Demands

Special Conditions for Eligibility

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
