A Day in the Life

As a Sr. Principal Software Engineer with a focus on Software Engineering Capabilities, Excellence Metrics, and Patient Safety, you will be at the forefront of ensuring that our software systems meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. You will be working with software teams in Cardiaovascular, Medical Surgical and Neuroscience portfolios at MEIC, and will play a key role in promoting best practices, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring that our software solutions align with both technical and regulatory requirements. This is a leadership role responsible for setting and monitoring software excellence deliverables, ensuring patient safety standards, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration across the organization. Reports to the Director of Software Technology. Collaborates with cross-functional teams (business analysts, developers, end-users) to understand requirements and deliver solutions.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned

Cross-Functional Collaboration : Partner with engineering, product management, and quality teams to assess project progress and ensure alignment with software excellence metrics, quality goals, and maturity standards.

Software Maturity & KPIs : Drive software maturity initiatives, tracking KPIs such as defect density, technical debt, and code quality. Implement frameworks to ensure reliability, scalability, and maintainability across the software lifecycle.

DevOps Integration : Oversee the integration of DevOps practices, optimizing CI/CD pipelines, automating testing, and improving deployment processes to enhance efficiency and system reliability.

Optimizing Tools & Processes : Lead the evaluation and optimization of software tools and development processes, ensuring teams use the most effective solutions for code analysis, automation, and collaboration.

Technical Reviews : Conduct critical reviews of software components to ensure best practices, code quality, and adherence to industry standards. Guide teams in optimizing development cycles and improving testing strategies.

Regulatory Compliance & Patient Safety : Ensure software meets regulatory requirements and patient safety standards by driving initiatives like Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) and Quality Improvement Plans. Mentorship & Skill Development : Provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering a culture of continuous learning and ensuring the team stays current with industry trends and best practices.

Leveraging Reusable Solutions : Promote the reuse of software components and frameworks across teams, enhancing efficiency and consistency while reducing development time.

Continuous Improvement : Analyze performance data to identify areas for improvement, leading initiatives to enhance software quality, safety, and user experience. Implement process improvements through regular assessments and industry benchmarking.

Stakeholder Communication : Regularly update stakeholders on progress, software maturity, and quality metrics, providing strategic recommendations for process improvements and alignment with business objectives.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • B-Tech/BE in Computer Science, Electronics, or related field with 20+ years of experience in Software and Systems Engineering, OR

  • ME/M-Tech with 18+ years of relevant experience.

  • Proven experience leading the development and delivery of enterprise-scale software systems with a focus on quality, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Expertise in defining and implementing software quality metrics and ensuring adherence to best practices in software development and testing.

  • Deep understanding of software engineering processes, including agile methodologies, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, and DevOps practices.

  • Experience driving software process improvement initiatives, leveraging data to enhance software development efficiency and product quality.

  • Hands-on experience with Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) principles, driving their integration into the software product lifecycle.

  • Familiarity with patient safety standards and industry regulations such as ISO 13485 and IEC 62304 for safety-critical systems, particularly in healthcare or medical device industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews, conduct code analysis, and ensure alignment with regulatory and industry standards.

  • Preferrable experience in developing software systems for regulated industries such as healthcare, aerospace, or automotive, where safety and quality are critical.

  • Preferrable expertise in statistical process control, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies to drive quality improvement initiatives.

  • Preferrable experience working with cloud-native or distributed systems, particularly in optimizing their reliability and scalability.

  • Preferrable hands-on experience with software maturity models, such as CMMI, and their application in driving software excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Preferrable previous leadership roles in driving cross-functional quality improvement initiatives, particularly in environments requiring stringent safety and regulatory compliance.
