Description of Key Responsibility:

Note that all functions described below must be performed, and it is normally the responsibility of the individual in this position to perform them and/or see that they are performed.

  1. Oversee and participate in the creation, development and use of strategic content that supports the College’s mission, vision, values and brand platform.

  2. Lead the effort to plan, edit and produce the North Central College Magazine with a focus on engaging editorial content that advances the strategic goals of the College.

  3. Monitor campus news sources and builds and maintain relationships with College faculty, staff and students to learn about potential news stories.

  4. Lead weekly meetings to review and discuss content, assign stories, ensure coverage of upcoming campus events, and assess photography needs; use a project management tool like Monday.com to track and organize story leads and production timelines.

  5. Ensure that content and story ideas are leveraged across various platforms, including the print and online magazine, website, social media, e-newsletter, speeches and other publications, and evaluate content for brand/voice consistency and accuracy.

  6. Write speeches and furnish talking points for the president and other College leaders, as needed, for formal speaking engagements.

  7. Play a key role in supporting major campus events including Homecoming, Commencement, State of the College/Opening Convocation, through the publication of event programs and script writing.

  8. Work collaboratively with the marketing and graphic design teams to plan and produce key publications and to obtain photography and other graphical elements.

  9. Collaborate with the alumni office on the submission of alumni stories and updates; hire and supervise a student worker to assist with writing the alumni news section of the College magazine and to assist in supporting the communications team in other ways that can help contribute to the students’ education and work experience.

  10. Act as the “gatekeeper” for the College’s editorial style guide and content standards.

  11. Serve as part of the communication team’s on-call rotation and as a member of the College’s Crisis Task Force.

  12. Other related duties as appropriately assigned.

Education/Training:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree a plus.

Experience:

Six to ten years’ experience in communications or journalism field. Higher education experience a plus.

Licenses or Certifications:

A current valid driver’s license.

Position Summary:

The Editorial Director & Executive Speech Writer oversees the creation of content supporting the College’s mission and values; strategic plan; brand platform; and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. This individual is responsible for the planning, editing and production of the North Central College Magazine, which includes developing themes and story ideas, assigning writers, arranging photography, and managing the overall production timeline from initial planning to final distribution. The Editorial Director & Executive Speech Writer is responsible for writing speeches and providing talking points for formal speaking engagements for the College president and other members of the College’s executive leadership team. This individual also provides thought leadership, writing and editing support for the College website; projects that support institutional marketing, admission, development and fundraising goals; social media channels; and major campus events and initiatives.
