Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in our Nash County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various pieces of equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled nightwork. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies

Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
