Position with a top-five publisher to create Children’s and Gift books for some of the most influential authors in Christian publishing. HarperCollins Christian Publishing is seeking an Art Director for gift books and children’s books, including devotionals, seasonal books, lifestyle books, journals, picture books, Bible storybooks, etc.

Seeking a candidate with strong creative vision, ideation, execution, organization, and communication skills. The position designs as well as provides conceptual direction for covers and book designs.

This position includes commissioning outside designers and vendors, working with internal designers, as well as doing hands-on design work. It is important for the art director to stay relevant with emerging design trends (color, format, fonts, illustrators).A successful art director will manage the creative work within budget and with close attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Concept, develop, and create award-winning book covers.

  • Commission and contractillustrators, designers, photographers, and other vendorsto develop cover designs and interior art, illustrations, and / or photography when needed.

  • Manage multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality control.

  • Meet production and sales cycle schedules.

  • Work within budget.

  • Prepare files for press.

Qualifications

Knowledge: Expert knowledge of graphic design, working knowledge of publishing and book manufacturing processes.

Work Experience: A minimum of 5 years professional design experience with at least 2 years in an Art Director capacity. All candidates must provide design samples and/or a link to an online portfolio for consideration.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.

Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of publishing, book manufacturing is preferable. Must possess a keen eye for market trends, fashion, and design.

Skills: Required excellence in Creative Cloud Suite(Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign),Adobe Creative Suite (MAC) and other design software, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);Proven project management and organizational skills; Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with a variety of deadlines and complexity simultaneously. Extremely detail oriented.
